Japanese gives students the opportunity to develop language skills while gaining a deeper understanding of one of Australia's closest neighbours. Through speaking, reading, writing and cultural exploration, boys build confidence in communication, broaden their global perspective and develop valuable intercultural skills that support future study, travel and international career opportunities.
Junior Years (Year 5-6)
Discover Japan Through Language
Japanese gives boys the opportunity to explore a new language while developing a deeper understanding of Japanese culture and society. Across Years 5 and 6, students learn to communicate in Japanese through topics connected to their everyday lives, including family, hobbies, school, food, festivals and celebrations.
They build foundational skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing while using Japanese creatively through conversations, descriptions, imaginative texts and practical activities. Cultural experiences encourage students to compare Japanese traditions and ways of life with their own, developing curiosity and intercultural understanding. From designing their own mascots to exploring Japanese cuisine and school life, students gain confidence expressing themselves while discovering the language, people and culture of Japan.
Middle Years (Year 7-9)
Building Language Through Culture and Conversation
Middle Years Japanese develops practical communication skills through engaging, real-world learning experiences.
Boys build confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing while exploring everyday topics such as school, travel, food and Japanese culture. Students also learn Hiragana, Katakana and introductory Kanji, creating a strong foundation for future language learning.
Senior Preparation (Year 10)
Developing Confidence and Fluency
Year 10 Japanese strengthens students' communication skills through more advanced grammar, authentic texts and cultural exploration.
Boys learn to express ideas with greater accuracy while analysing Japanese media, advertising and contemporary issues. Through speaking, writing and collaborative tasks, students develop the confidence and language skills required for senior Japanese.
Senior Years (Year 11-12)
Communicating Across Cultures
Senior Japanese challenges students to communicate confidently across a range of personal, social and global contexts.
Through authentic texts, conversations and cultural investigations, boys refine their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills while developing a deeper appreciation of Japanese language and society. The subject prepares students for future pathways in business, international relations, tourism and beyond.
