Faith in Action
One of the most profound parables in the Gospel involves a Samaritan man seeing the need to support a person in need and doing something about it. Edmund Rice, the founder of the Christian Brothers, recognised a need to support poor boys in Waterford, Ireland, and took action. Brother Patrick Ambrose Treacy, the founder of Nudgee College, saw the need for a second Christian Brothers school in Brisbane and completed our beautiful school in 1891.
A Nudgee student puts their values, beliefs and faith into action with their head, heart, hands and feet. In extensive and varied activities, every boy is empowered to support the poor and marginalised in our community through a range of service, advocacy and awareness campaigns.
Social Justice Program
Through the College's Social Justice Program, students are encouraged to build new perspectives, break down stereotypes and build a better world for all. As a College, we champion a culture of service and sustainability with initiatives aimed at creating an option for the poor and through protecting our natural environment. These include:
- Weekly breakfast van to Fortitude Valley
- Weekly service event with local Special School
- Weekly reading program
- Monthly service and contribution to Emmanuel City Mission homeless shelter
- Weekly service with Coffee Brigade
- A Comprehensive recycling program
- Waste audits to review what is being thrown in the rubbish and what can be recycled
- Significant campaigns to support Caritas and Shave for a Cure
In addition to these regular and consistent activities, each House also has a unique service connection and charity which they support each annum. Examples include St Vincent De Paul, Orange Sky Laundry and Oz Care.
Immersion Program
All students in Year 9 participate in an immersion experience in the final week of Term 3. Students nominate to participate in international, domestic or local opportunities. Immersion challenges students to see the world from a different perspective and with new experiences. It challenges our boys to encounter situations and scenarios which they may have never before experienced. Our Year 9 Nudgee men are called to follow the example of Jesus by being compassionate, engaged and empathetic citizens who contribute meaningfully to their world. Through a diverse range of local and international experiences, students will:
- Connect with Diverse Communities – Engage with individuals and communities from varied backgrounds, fostering empathy, understanding, and solidarity. This may include working alongside those experiencing homelessness, interacting with people with disabilities, or collaborating with Indigenous communities.
- Encounter Social Issues Firsthand – Gain real-world insight into poverty, inequality, environmental challenges, and social justice issues, deepening their awareness of global complexities.
- Cultivate Social Responsibility – Through service projects, advocacy initiatives, and community engagement, students develop a sense of responsibility and are empowered to create positive change.
- Develop Leadership & Life Skills – Immersion encourages students to step beyond their comfort zones, navigate unfamiliar situations, and work collaboratively. These experiences build resilience, problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills, preparing them for future challenges.
