Chess Support Group

Coordinator: Martin Harmon

Main Nudgee staff contact: Martin Harmon, Chess Coaches, Robyn Bowley and Sam Smith

Main purpose of group:
While cheering and clapping may not be allowed at GPS Chess and other competitions it's just as important as any other activity, that our chess boys know that they're supported. When they're concentrating in a difficult position just looking up and seeing a smiling face can make a world of difference. Our group can keep parents informed of their opportunities to watch and support at chess matches both GPS and non-GPS. For parents who are able, it can also allow them to take a more hands-on role helping with keeping the boys fed and their energy up for the grueling effort of the intellectual battle they are undertaking.

Usual meeting dates: Volunteers can assist with feeding the boys on Friday afternoons before our GPS matches in Term 3, approx 4pm, and by assisting with our canteens during our Sunday competitions (one per term).

Debating Support Group

Coordinator: Julianne Daunt

Main Nudgee staff contact: Julianne Daunt, Dominic Caroll and Grace Waterman

Main purpose of activity: NC Debating is proving to be a force to be reckoned with amongst our GPS and Queensland Debating Union (QDU) competitors. Nudgee Debating  works closely with both organisations to produce high quality debaters and foster an enjoyment of academic rigour. The GPS season is a Term 1 activity; the QDU competition runs from mid Term 1 and into Term 2. Debaters are consistently represented in student leadership groups across year levels and are significantly represented in academically demanding subjects. This illustrates the role that debating plays in developing the whole person and its contribution to the learning culture of the College

Usual meeting dates: Term 1GPS Season Friday afternoons/ evenings, QDU Debating evenings dates and times scheduled by Queensland Debating Union (QDU).
