English
The Power of Voice & Storytelling
Language shapes how we see ourselves and the world around us. Our English curriculum develops thoughtful communicators, creative thinkers and confident leaders. Through language, literature and literacy, students engage with imaginative, informative and persuasive texts. Reading, viewing, writing and speaking build intellectual flexibility, empathy and critical awareness, equipping boys to succeed across academic disciplines and beyond.
Junior School (Year 5-6)
Building Literacy & Narrative Skills
Younger boys develop a strong foundation in reading comprehension, creative storytelling, and persuasive expression.
Students explore narrative writing, deconstruct persuasive arguments on real-world issues, and create detailed media and information reports. Through engaging novel studies, author analysis, and poetry, boys build essential language, spelling, and presentation skills while learning how authors craft stories to influence readers.
Middle Years (Year 7-9)
Exploring Perspectives & Finding Your Voice
Middle Years English encourages curiosity and critical thinking through diverse literature, real-world issues, and creative media.
Boys investigate engaging themes, from survival and adventure to dystopian worlds and media influence. Tailored pathways (including English, Essential English, and English Honours) ensure every boy is challenged as he learns to construct persuasive arguments, craft imaginative narratives, and present his ideas with confidence.
Senior Years (Year 10-12)
Critical Analysis, Literature & Senior Pathways
In Senior English, boys refine their ability to analyse complex texts, evaluate diverse perspectives, and master communication for tertiary and career success.
Beginning in Year 10, students examine how culture, identity, and societal values are represented in literary and non-literary texts. In Years 11 and 12, boys engage in rigorous text analysis, imaginative creation, and public speaking across a range of senior offerings, including General English, Literature, Essential English, and English & Literature Extension.
