Writers' Circle
Writing with Purpose, Creativity and Confidence
Writers’ Circle provides students with a welcoming and purposeful environment to explore ideas, experiment with language and develop confidence in their creative voice. Students work across a range of forms, genres and styles through writing projects, workshops, and independent composition.
Welcoming both experienced writers and emerging storytellers, the program encourages curiosity, practice, thoughtful feedback and creative risk-taking.
The Writing Process
Developing the Writer
Sessions guide students through the different stages of the writing process, from generating an initial idea to drafting, revising, editing and preparing a polished piece for an audience.
Students explore important elements of effective writing, including character, setting, structure, voice, imagery, dialogue and point of view. Rather than focusing only on a finished product, Writers’ Circle encourages students to reflect on how and why writing works, make deliberate creative choices, evaluate their own work and use feedback to strengthen their writing.
Through Writers' Circle, I have had the privilege of watching the younger students find confidence in their words and realise their stories are worth sharing. Seeing their growth makes me realise that as a leader, my most important job is not to provide all the answers, but to inspire the confidence and courage in others to find them on their own.
Mentorship and Community
Mentoring and Belonging
Writers’ Circle brings together students from different year levels through a shared interest in language, imagination and storytelling. Students are encouraged to exchange ideas, discuss their work and contribute feedback within a respectful and supportive environment.
Experienced senior students may serve as mentors, helping younger writers develop their ideas and confidence while strengthening their own leadership and communication skills. This cross-year collaboration creates a community where students learn from one another and recognise that every writer’s process and voice are different.
Sharing their Stories
Writing for Authentic Audiences
Students are encouraged to take their writing beyond the workshop through internal and external competitions, publications and literary opportunities. Writers may submit work to the Maggie Shaw Creative Writing Competition, pursue external recognition or prepare pieces for publication and sharing within the College community.
The program has enjoyed recent successes, including winning submissions in the Queensland Literary Competition in 2025 and 2026, as well as raising more than $5000 through the annual Write a Book in a Day Competition. Our ongoing partnership with Viridian Aged Care also gives students the opportunity to use their words to connect, uplift and inspire through quarterly visits where students and residents share their stories.
