Debating
Building Confident Voices Through Debating
Debating at Nudgee develops students’ confidence and ability to communicate ideas clearly, persuasively and with purpose. Through training and competition, students learn to analyse complex issues, construct logical arguments, respond thoughtfully and speak confidently before an audience.
Welcoming all experience levels, the program offers GPS competition alongside workshops, masterclasses and development opportunities throughout the year.
The Craft of Debate
Developing Confident Communicators
Students are supported to develop every stage of the debating process. They learn how to interpret a topic, research effectively, organise arguments, use evidence and examples, and deliver speeches with clarity and conviction. Training also develops active listening, teamwork and the ability to think quickly under pressure.
Junior students build strong foundations in argument and public speaking, while more experienced debaters refine their strategic understanding, rebuttal, case construction and persuasive delivery. Feedback from coaches and adjudicators helps students recognise their strengths, respond to challenges and continue improving across each season.
Hearing the school cheer for Debating - with the same intensity as Rugby - is a feeling better than lifting any premiership trophy could ever give.
Representing the College
Competition and Representation
Students have opportunities to represent Nudgee through the GPS Debating season, Queensland Debating Union competition, and International Debating Competition. Teams prepare together through weekly training, practice debates and targeted coaching.
The program extends beyond formal competition through short-preparation debates, development workshops and specialist masterclasses. These experiences expose students to different debating formats and challenge them to apply their skills in unfamiliar and demanding situations.
Building Future Leaders
Leadership Beyond the Lectern
Senior debaters are encouraged to contribute to the growth of the wider program by mentoring younger students, modelling strong preparation habits and supporting junior teams. These opportunities allow experienced students to deepen their own understanding while developing leadership, organisation and coaching skills.
Through debating, students learn that effective communication is not simply about speaking the loudest. It requires careful thought, respectful engagement, intellectual courage and a willingness to consider perspectives beyond their own.
