Try the Arts: Find Your Place in Performing Arts
Nudgee News
A Chance to Try Something New
For many students, joining a new activity begins with one simple decision: to give something a try.
On Sunday 1 November, Nudgee College will host its Try the Arts Junior Day, giving students and families the opportunity to experience the breadth of Performing Arts at Nudgee through practical activities, demonstrations and conversations with the students who know these programs best.
Across the morning, students will be able to explore areas including music, drama, debating, Writers’ Circle, chess, esports, visual art, Theatresports and technical production. The day is designed for students who may already have an established interest, as well as those who are simply curious about trying something new.
For Performing Arts Prefect Marcus, that sense of discovery is central to the culture of the program.
Everyone has an art. It’s inviting people to find or show their art which really means the most to me as a Performing Arts leader
Finding Your Place Through The Arts
Marcus believes students should not feel they need to arrive with experience or a particular skill set.
“Just be yourself. If there’s a style of art you are interested in, go for it. Art is for everyone, and everyone has their own art. You might learn something new, make some new friends, or even discover something about yourself.”
That idea of finding your place is reflected across the Performing Arts program.
For Senior A Debater Sam, debating has become as much about community as competition. One of his goals is to strengthen the connections between students across different year levels so that younger debaters can learn from older students, coaches and one another.
A strong debating team and community means being able to rely on one another and trust one another to do everyone’s jobs correctly
The Value of Getting Involved
Sam's advice to younger students is straightforward: start talking to people and become involved.
“Being in a younger year and talking to kids in the older years and older coaches is essential to developing your debating skills.”
And for anyone worried about stepping into debating for the first time?
“It isn’t as scary as you think.”
That same message is echoed by Student Esports Coordinator and Writers' Circle Lead Mentor Jake, who believes students should not feel pressure to already be accomplished before becoming involved.
“There is nothing to worry about. You have many people to support you, from staff to students, and there is always someone there to help.”
For Jake, Performing Arts is not about arriving as the finished product. It is about growth.
“Don’t worry about being ‘good’ at an activity. Performing Arts is about helping students grow as individuals and achieve the level they want. There is no pressure to be a great performer - as long as you try your best, that is what matters.”
Try the Arts Day gives students the opportunity to experience that breadth for themselves, meet current students and staff, and discover where their own interests may lead.
Whether you already know what you love or are looking for somewhere to begin, the invitation is simple: come and try.
