Sharing Nudgee’s Approach to Music Education
Two Nudgee College educators recently shared our approach to music education with colleagues from across Australia, presenting their paper From Voice to Instrument: Supporting Boys to Flourish Through a Kodály-Inspired Primary Music Immersion Program at the Kodály National Conference in Adelaide.
The presentation explored Nudgee’s Year 5 Music Immersion Program and the impact of giving every student the opportunity to sing, move, play, work through challenges and experience success while learning an instrument.
Sharing Practice, Strengthening Learning
For Belinda and Sam, the conference provided an opportunity to share a program they believe offers a distinctive approach to music education while reflecting on the conditions that help students grow and flourish.
The presentation attracted strong interest from conference attendees, with educators asking questions about the program's structure and how it works in practice at Nudgee.
“It was great to see so many people interested in what we had to say,” Belinda and Sam said. “They asked lots of questions about what we do and what our program looks like.”
The experience also gave the teachers a chance to reflect on their own practice while learning from other Kodály-inspired educators across Australia.
We knew that what we did at Nudgee was special and that we wanted to share it with others that may be ready to start an immersion program or already have a program.
They now return to Nudgee with new ideas to strengthen the connections between singing, movement, aural learning and instrumental playing, along with new games and songs to share with students.
The conference presentation highlighted the role of Nudgee’s Primary Music Program in creating opportunities for boys to be challenged, experience success and develop their confidence through music.
Congratulations to Belinda and Sam on this wonderful achievement and for representing Nudgee at a national level.
