The Quiet Power of Presence
The following is an excerpt from edition 18 of Behind the Stripes.
A calm and grounded adult can help shift the emotional tone of an interaction. For adolescents, whose capacity for emotional regulation and decision-making is still developing, being genuinely listened to without interruption, judgement or immediate problem-solving can create the space to make sense of their thoughts and feelings.
This process is known as co-regulation, where young people draw on the calm and stability of trusted adults as they continue developing their own capacity to manage emotions. Over time, these experiences can help strengthen their ability to regulate themselves.
At Nudgee, we strive to create psychological safety so students feel respected, trusted and able to speak openly. This is not about removing challenges or lowering expectations. Rather, it is about creating an environment where students feel secure enough to engage honestly, take risks in their learning and seek support when they need it.
Staff, students and parents all have a role to play in creating this environment. Simple actions such as listening to understand rather than immediately trying to fix a problem, naming emotions, being aware of our own emotional state and modelling healthy ways of coping can all help.
