Mr Scott Thomson (Week 4, Term 3)
Dear Nudgee College Community,
Throughout this term, our students have continued to involve themselves in sport, the arts, service, and academic life with great enthusiasm. Among the many lessons they learn in these settings, perhaps none is more important than how to carry themselves in both triumph and adversity. At Nudgee, we believe that true character is revealed not just when we win, but also when we lose.
I offer this timely reminder to all families and would appreciate you engaging in this topic with your son/s. The virtues of being gracious in defeat and humble in victory are as relevant today as they have ever been. These values are deeply rooted in the Christian tradition, and we are reminded in Philippians 2:3 to "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility, value others above yourselves." This passage calls us to celebrate others and approach all situations with humility and perspective.
Recently (2022 and 2023), the world witnessed a powerful example of grace in defeat when tennis star Ons Jabeur, after losing the Wimbledon final for the second year in a row, congratulated her opponent with heartfelt admiration and humility. In a similar vein, when Queensland secured victory in the 2025 State of Origin series, captain Cameron Munster was quick to acknowledge the effort and skill of the NSW side, an act of leadership that resonated with many, including our boys.
At Nudgee, we don’t just want boys to learn how to win or lose, we want them to understand how to be men of character in every circumstance. These virtues will be central to our Year 12 Leadership selection process for 2026, which begins in the coming weeks. As we speak to students about potential roles, we will be looking for those who embody humility, resilience, and service; those who are a true Signum Fidei. Leadership at Nudgee is not about being in charge, it is about setting the tone for others and putting the needs of the community before your own. It will be with great honour and humility that the right young men will be selected through this rigorous process.
In that same spirit of community, I look forward to welcoming Nudgee community members to the Long Lunch on Wilkes Oval on Sunday 10 August. This will be a wonderful occasion to connect with one another, share stories, and enjoy the hospitality and spirit that makes Nudgee such a special place.
Thank you for your ongoing support and commitment to the values that shape our boys.
Kind Regards
Scott Thomson
