Mr Scott Thomson
This week marks two significant events; one infinitely more important than the other. Firstly, and of less importance, this week sees the conclusion of Term 1 at Nudgee College. Secondly, and most importantly, we find ourselves immersed in Holy Week, the culmination of this Lenten season that concludes with Easter Sunday.
In acknowledging the conclusion of Term 1, I would like to start by thanking all Nudgee College families for their support and engagement throughout the last ten weeks. To our new families, I hope that you have experienced a strong sense of welcome and connection to this great school and that your young man has enjoyed the start of his Nudgee journey. Whilst the rain has certainly attempted to dampen the spirits of all within our community this week, it has not succeeded and there is a sense of excitement and anticipation amongst the boys and staff as assessments conclude and focus turns to the coming two weeks. I wish all those who are lucky enough to be enjoying a break a very safe, relaxing and fulfilling time.
As is the case with Nudgee College, apart from the Easter weekend, there will be numerous training sessions, camps, clinics and tutorials that will continue throughout the ensuing two weeks. To all of the staff involved in such activities, both directly and indirectly, I would like to offer a heartfelt thank you in advance for all that work that lays ahead. It is greatly appreciated by our boys and families.
Of greater importance, as I stated at the commencement of this article, is of course what commences this Thursday, Holy Thursday. This weekend commemorates and celebrates the painful death and life-giving resurrection of our Lord’s only son, Jesus Christ. During his 1986 visit to Australia (one that some parents may remember), the then Pope John Paul II stated, “We do not pretend that life is all beauty. We are aware of darkness and sin, of poverty and pain. But we know Jesus has conquered sin and passed through his own pain to the glory of the Resurrection. ‘We are an Easter People and Alleluia is our song!’”
As a Catholic community that is composed of a diverse range of students from various backgrounds, faiths and interests, it is important that we all remember what is at the core of our school’s foundation and what continues to drive us as a faith community. The presence and example of Jesus Christ is what inspires Nudgee students to be a Signum Fidei - a 'Sign of Faith'. He, is who drives staff to ensure that they are helping to “liberate the hearts and minds” of every boy in our care.
Finally, thank you for Term 1, have a happy, holy and joy-filled Easter and I look forward to an exciting Term 2 with you all.
Kind regards
Scott Thomson
