How the Blue Card System Keeps Children Safe

This two-minute video from Blue Card Services – Queensland Government explains how the system protects children and why organisations like Nudgee take part in it.

Things you need to know before applying for a Blue Card

What is the Blue Card system?

The Blue Card system screens and monitors people who work or volunteer with children in Queensland. At Nudgee, no one commences child-related work until the correct checks are complete and (where required) their Blue Card is linked to the College.

Who Needs a Blue Card?

Requirements depend on your role and the setting. Please use the Queensland Government guidance below to confirm your situation. All people who work or volunteer with children at Nudgee College must hold a valid Blue Card unless an exemption applies.

Still unsure?

Nudgee College’s principle is simple: Thinking about helping out? Apply for a Blue Card and link it to the College — it’s free and ensures every student learns in a safe environment.

Restricted Person and Restricted Employment Declarations

At Nudgee College, we take our child-safeguarding responsibilities seriously.

In addition to holding a valid Blue Card, staff, contractors, volunteers, and members of an NC Association Group Committee (including the Ladies’ Auxiliary, Nudgee College Old Boys’ Association (NCOBA), and Parent Support Groups) are required to complete the NC - Restricted Employment and Restricted Person Declaration Form annually.

This declaration confirms that the person:

  • is not restricted or disqualified from working or volunteering with children under Queensland law, and
  • understands their ongoing obligation to notify the College if their status changes.

Parents or community members who help at one-off events may also be invited to complete the declaration as part of our best-practice safeguarding approach.

For example: A parent/carer who holds a Blue Card and joins a Parent Support Group committee will complete the NC - Restricted Employment and Restricted Person Declaration Form each year to confirm that they remain eligible to have a Blue Card and are not restricted from volunteering in any way.

Why are both a Blue Card and this declaration required?

  • Holding a Blue Card shows that you have been screened and cleared by Blue Card Services to work or volunteer with children. Completing this NC - Restricted Employment and Restricted Person Declaration Form is an extra legal step that confirms you are not prohibited or restricted from working with children and that your Blue Card status has not changed.

These checks help ensure that every student at Nudgee College learns and develops in a safe environment.

If a person’s circumstances change and they become a restricted person, they must immediately stop all work or volunteering with children and notify both Blue Card Services and the College.

Under-18 Coaches and Volunteers

Some of our senior students also serve as coaches, tutors or regular volunteers. While not always legally required, Nudgee encourages 16- and 17-year-old students who coach or volunteer regularly to apply for a Blue Card and link it to the College as part of our commitment to student safety and leadership.

  • This is particularly important for student coaches.

Training - Nudgee Community Learning Portal

In addition to Blue Cards, all staff, contractors and volunteers must complete mandatory child-safety training before commencing.

Follow this link to the Nudgee College Community Learning Portal Flyer. Once self-registered, mandatory training courses will be automatically assigned.

Training supports our shared goal of creating a culture where every student feels safe, respected and empowered to speak up.

This training meets requirements under Queensland’s Child Safe Standards and the Working with Children Act, ensuring all adults who work or volunteer with students understand their safeguarding responsibilities.

Our Child and Youth Risk Management Strategy is reviewed annually to ensure it meets legislative and EREA requirements
