GPS Swimming Championships

On Friday 8 March, the College's Junior and Senior Swimming teams competed in the GPS Swimming Championships at the Brisbane Aquatic Centre.

The Juniors were first up, with Year 5 student Benji Brandt setting the standard for the day with a win in the first event; the Under 10 100m freestyle. With a series of impressive swims, including a GPS record breaking race by Year 5 student Harrison Beirne in the Under 10 50m freestyle, the Junior team finished in first place ahead of ACGS in second and BBC in third.

The Senior competition followed and saw many courageous swims by the blue and white athletes. The relay events were particular highlights, with every team finishing outside the bottom three. By the end of the meet, Nudgee College emerged victorious for the second time that day, winning the Senior competition.

Swimming Director Mr David Proud said one really pleasing statistic from the event was that Nudgee College only won one more individual event than IGS, who finished in ninth place.

"This demonstrates that we won the meet with our depth," he said.

"We placed inside the top three 16 times out of 32 individual events."

This was the first time the Junior team took out the Championship, and the first time since 2012 that the Seniors team recorded a win.
