Holy Creator Spirit, We see in St Joseph a tenderness and reverence for all creation.
We learn from him to approach others justly and tenderly, and to see our world as endowed with the glory of God. Teach us to
love one another and to be of humble service to all of creation, empowered by your life within us.
St Joseph, wise protector and humble servant, pray for us.

It certainly augers well for a great year next year.
Great to see over 150 Barrett family members enjoy a Sunday afternoon at Ruggers after our annual ‘Christmas in July’ dinner was cancelled at the last minute. Thanks to Heather Trethowan for organising the event and to all those who brought raffle prizes. There were a few excited winners. Money collected will be sent to our House charity – Anawin Orphanage in the Philippines.

Cotter
Despite some difficulties, it has been another phenomenal term in Cotter House. It was certainly one to remember! As always, Term 3 was jam-packed with sport, academics, events and more. Sprinkle on top of that a period of lockdown, increased restrictions and border closures! Whilst we cannot say it has been smooth sailing, I must commend all of the boys on their resilience and positivity throughout a challenging term.
Our Year 12s are in the midst of a busy time, completing mock exams and studying hard. It is usually towards the end of Term 3 that the reality sets in - the end is near! This is certainly true for our Cotter Seniors. Term 4 brings with it a great deal of excitement but also a sense of sadness and we prepare to farewell our oldest boarders. Despite the normal trepidation, I know that all of our Year 12 men are ready for the next step in their journey, whatever that may be.
As we prepare for our Seniors to leave our gates, it is time to pass the candles to our new leaders in Cotter House. The Cotter Year 11 cohort is ready to take the reins and take our dorm to new heights, with the support of staff and the younger Cotter Men.
To add to this natural period of change, there will be a new Head of Cotter Boarding House next year, as I begin my role of Dean of Boarding. I recently announced that Mr Mike Silcock will take over as Director of Boarding and Head of Cotter Boarding House. We are very excited for Mike and his family to join our community and, I must say, they found the right man for the job! Soon you will all be thinking, “Casey who?”
However, we mustn’t be caught looking too far ahead just yet. We need to finish 2021 with determination, excitement and joy. Personally, I am going to soak up every minute I spend in Cotter House during Term 4. I look forward to all of the challenges, celebrations and successes that it brings.
I hope that you all enjoy some downtime together over the holidays. My thoughts and prayers are with those boys who are not returning home due to border closures - I know this holiday may be difficult for you.
Termly Reminders:
Summer uniform for the beginning of Term 4
Please ensure your boys return with appropriate haircuts
The first weekend of Term 4 in a Boarders’ Weekend In - No leave permitted
Mr Casey Brealy
Head of Cotter Boarding House

Congratulations to DU2 on winning the Term 3 Inter PC Competition. Congratulations also go to DU8 for winning against DU9 in the Junior school competition. See the scoreboard below! Brownies will be there in Week 1 of Term 2.
Term 3 has been punctuated by many highlights for me as House Dean. The wonderful sense of community that comes from the House Bake, the significant upward trend of our academic medallists and the celebration of those who have made significant strides to improve their grades. My moment of the term, however, is highlighted in the picture below from the Edmund Rice Camp. It is James Chapman (DU7) allowing himself to become a living canvas for the simple sense of joy that it brought to a young child from a disadvantaged background. Like the other Duggan volunteers, the simple act of being a servant to others goes hand in hand with our Catholic teaching. The story of Jesus washing the feet of his disciples is a powerful and enduring message to us all. To lead with authenticity we have to genuinely care and “live” in the service of others. It is in this service that a great sense of peace, fulfilment and happiness can be found. It is in the same sense of service to others that I was humbled recently to have the role of House Dean be made permanent. I am grateful for the trust placed in me and will continue to serve the Duggan Family to the best of my ability.
I hope all in Duggan House have a wonderful and relaxing break and I look forward to seeing you in Term 4 for what is always a fast paced and exciting term.
Be safe and God bless!
Mr Karim Sedour
Duggan House Dean
Fogarty
As expected, Term 3 lived up to its reputation as the busiest of the year with major events on the academic, cultural and sporting calendars. With rescheduled events due to lockdowns also included, it has made for a frantic, yet successful ten weeks for the Fogarty Community.
We were blessed to still be able to run a condensed Kairos Retreat for the Year 12 cohort. Every year this is a highlight of the College calendar and this year’s group certainly enjoyed the experience. Thank you for all the work behind the scenes to make this retreat powerful and meaningful.
Congratulations to the following young Fogarty men for receiving Awards after their impressive semester one results:
Gold Award: Darcy Cotter, Jeremy Deakin, Samuel Browne, Avneesh Sidhu, Wade Lucas, Daniel Neal, Lachlan Bancroft, Elliot Browne, Josh Ford, Darcy Hardwick, Douglas Gemmell, Benjamin Neal & Aiden Woolf
Silver Award: Michael Georgieff, Roman Jones, Eddie Power, Henry Potter, Angus Twist, Mitchell Vivers, Leo Fraser, Hunter Ireland, Nate Scott, Tom Bishop & Sethum Goonewardena.
Bronze Award: Jordan Irvine, Patrick Cook, Hugo Wendt, Xavier Bishop, Lucas Fletcher, Hayden Malone, Edan McDonald, Joshua Hagenbach, Aidan Read, Gale Sellers, Alexander Hardwick & Reyhan Iswariah
Principal Award Winners: Felix Timbs, Henry Page, Isaac Johannes, Benjamin Slatter, Xavier Filmer and Mason Davis.
Congratulations also to Ben Wyatt, who was also awarded a Mid-Year Prefect position.
For the first time in many years, our Fogarty team performed outstandingly well in the Inter-House Debating, securing a podium finish. It was so pleasing to see our three representatives from Year 5, 11 and 12 come together, and excel at the lectern. Well done to Noah Doxey (Year 5), Josh Ford (Year 11) and Doug Gemmell (Year 12) who placed 3rd overall, narrowly being defeated by the eventual champions - Magee.
Fogarty were proud to celebrate the amazing contribution of Year 6 student, Jacob Davies, in Term 3. In Semester 1, Jacob took it upon himself to raise funds for Down Syndrome; an important cause in his personal life. Without seeking recognition or praise, he sold lollies to his peers to raise the funds. Jacob surprised the staff in the head office of Down Syndrome Queensland, when he walked in with a check for $608.60. Jacob was the deserving recipient of the “Fogarty Team Man” award.
Congratulations to the following Year 11 students who were successful in their leadership applications, and will lead the College in 2022: Elliot Browne, Aidan Read, Nate Scott, Ethan Schneider-Loos and Matthew Wendt (College Prefects).
Have a safe and happy holiday.
Mr Ken Adams
Fogarty House Dean
Hodda
Hodda Family
At the start of each year when I speak to the new parents, I like to give them a sense of what we are trying to do here in Hodda. This usually revolves around a vision of a ‘home away from home’ and us developing a family feel. I hope we have done that for your sons this term and that they do feel like we are one big family. Our staff pride themselves on being approachable, caring and genuinely interested in the overall wellbeing of each of our Hodda boys.
Year 10 Immersions
The Year 10 Immersions are on again this week, and we have many boys getting involved in what will be an amazing experience for them. The Immersion will challenge them physically and emotionally, but I know from experience, they will come back bigger and better from the journeys they shared and the people they met.
I thank all the boys who have already started helping with our new NC Community Vege Garden. I know it will turn into a space we can all be proud of. If you have any cuttings, herbs, seeds, etc., please send them back with your son at the start of next term. We will definitely find a place for them.
Hodda Leaders
Although we are fortunate to have our Hodda House leaders, Rodin Martin and Jamie Knight, we are also lucky to have many boys who display great leadership day in day out in the House, which staff really appreciate. I would like to celebrate some of those boys now. Here are the boys who have won the Hodda Cup this term. This award goes to boys for their leadership, study, contribution and overall conduct. The boys are: Ben Maxa, Liam McBride, Thomas Brandenburg, and Owen Collins just to mention a few. Well done to these boys and the way they have shown all the boys in Hodda what it takes to be gentlemen and signs of faith.
I’d also like to congratulate the boys who were selected as 2022 College Prefects: Des Cowley, James Chapman, Jake Gilmore, Edward Chapman, Tom Shaw and Ryan Davey. Well done to them and I look forward to watching them grow as young men and leaders in 2022.
Returning for Term 4
Can I please ask that you ensure your son comes back to boarding with an appropriate haircut, proper uniforms(Summer next term), labelled clothing, a blue drawstring laundry bag and all his equipment to start school like calculator, books etc. It is difficult for us to start the term by having to chase boys up who have had all holidays to get these things right. We’d rather simply be welcoming them back as opposed to talking to them about haircuts and the like. Your cooperation is very much appreciated. The boys will need their winter uniforms as well due to the number of formal occasions and farewells.
I wish you all the best for a wonderful Spring break with your sons and I look forward to welcoming them all back safely for what will be a busy and exciting Term 4.
Mr Ken Mitchell
Head of Hodda Boarding House
Magee
Despite another lockdown and period of learning@home, we managed to [mostly] achieve business as usual at Nudgee College. It seems that this has now become part of life and we are constantly discovering new ways of achieving established goals.
During the June/July holidays, students from Years 8 and 10 participated [virtually] in the National da Vinci Decathlon competition with Knox Grammar School. Schools from all over Australia had the opportunity to compete either in person or online.
The Year 8 team members were highly successful and placed 3rd overall in the discipline of Cartography. Dermot Clancy was the Magee representative in the team. Year 10 team participants included Aidan Easton, Anthony Mineo and Joseph Wesche. Their team gained first place in Ideation. The Year 11 team included Yashodhan Rayani. This team gained 1st in Science, and 3rd in Cartography and English. Great results all round.
This term, we had the privilege of seeing Zac Smullen invested as a mid-year prefect. Zac has worked very hard on a number of projects within the House and it was with much pleasure that he was named a Prefect, joining Rohan Astbury, Dylan Eastland and Ethan Petcos and our Big Brothers Oska Boyd, Byron Smith, Nikhil Lalwani and Sam Klein in the leadership ranks. In Week 10, the College had the pleasure of announcing our 2022 leaders. Congratulations to Lachlan Barrett (Studies Prefect), Akot Akot (Community Prefect), Charlie Dezius (Boarding Prefect), Ben Evans, Cruz Lemming and Isaac Lofaro (House Prefects). Archie Condon, Jonah Nelson, Ryan Wedmaier and Tom Robertson have accepted the role of Big Brothers next year. Well done to all who applied.
There was outstanding Magee representation in the 2021 First XV. Oska Boyd, Daniel Maiava-Tapusoa, Byron Smith and Charlie Stack were all named in the starting team for Round One. Oska began the season with a flourish bagging a four try haul.
Inter-House Debating began in an online knock-out round. Fortunately, we were able to move to an in person competition because we were able to witness the Magee juggernaut of Ethan Petcos, Ed Gerry and Dylan Eastland completely annihilate the opposition and emerge Debating champions.
Year 11 Leadership Days were a great success. Michael Fitzpatrick (Day One), Br Damian Price and Michael Pini (NCOB) and Br Vince Connors (Day Two) all led the boys in the teasing out of leadership and what that means in the Nudgee College context. A team art activity resulted in this painting of our beloved Chapel. Thanks to Isaac Lofaro who completed the “finishing touches” for us.
Theatresports: Dylan Eastland, Zac Smullen and their team have made the grand final of Theatre Sports that will be held on 9 October. So far in the season, they have come up against Hillbrook, Churchie, All Hallows, Villanova and Sheldon College; stiff opposition indeed.
Congratulations to the following students whose academic improvement has earned them a principal’s award: Charlie Riethmuller, Lewis McGrorey, Will Condon, Xavier Cantero, Myles Armstrong, Harry Lloyd, James Duggan, Daniel Maiava-Tapusoa, Will Godson, Ben Ryan, Lucio Valle.
The Year 12 Kairos Retreat was held as a one day abridged version of the usual three days. However, having now participated in 12 Kairos Retreats at Nudgee College, I can say that the three days distilled brilliantly into one and all boys were affirmed by the experience.
Importantly, thank you to the army of House Parents, led by Jo Smith, Wendy Astbury and Danielle Mills, who gave the boys another spectacular Muffin Break. The boys feel privileged to be the beneficiaries of so many treats. The House Parents seem to dodge and weave COVID-19 outbreaks so that the boys never miss out.
Thank you, too, to our Magee PC tutors for another great term. This term we farewelled Jorden Smith (Ma 8) who has taken up a position at Downlands College and welcomed Matthew Smith to the fold. Matthew is a NCOB and so is returning to familiar territory. Tammy Grindley (Ma 1), Sione Mohenoa (Ma 2), Cameron Brown (Ma 3), Katherine Ellis (Ma 4), Dayne Tracey (Ma 5), Warren Roberts (Ma 6), Simone Hanran (Ma 7) and Jack Dahms (Ma 9) continue to support all the boys in their respective PCs. I thank them for all they do, bringing a depth and breadth of experience and skills to the Magee community.
Ms Julianne Daunt
Magee House Dean
McKenna
As Term 3 comes to a close, I would like to congratulate all of the young men in McKenna House. Despite some challenges in the term, I would say they have made the most of the opportunities that have been on offer. The lockdown from COVID-19 that occurred earlier in the term had potential to be significantly disruptive; however, from the conversations I have had, all students embraced the online learning environment. Having this growth mindset is something that will help the McKenna students not only at Nudgee College but beyond the gates. Whilst there have been some disruptions, it still has been a busy term.
Year 11 Leadership
Over the past couple of weeks, some of our Year 11 students have responded to the call of leadership and applied for Prefect/Big Brother positions for 2022. These boys have volunteered their time throughout the year, completed an application process and had an interview with myself and a member of the Senior Leadership team. Regardless of the outcome, all of these students will lead their house strongly with the other Seniors of 2022.
Year 12 exam preparation
It has also been a busy term for our Year 12s with the completion of their final assignments, their final house mass and Mock exams in preparation for their external exams early next term. Soon they will begin their leaving the gates program in Student Formation when we start back in Term 4.
Inter-house debating
McKenna House fought hard in inter-house debating this year winning our round match. I was lucky enough to attend the Semi Final against Shaw House. Whilst we produced a very high quality debate, we went down narrowly to Shaw House. Congratulations to all who were involved.
Year 10 Immersion
Nudgee College provides so many learning experiences for the young men that attend the College. These are no more profound than that of the Year 10 Immersion. During Week 10 of this Term the whole of Year 10 embark on this journey together. Whilst it has not been the same the past two years due to COVID-19, it is still a pivotal moment in the pastoral journey of the Nudgee College student. The boys will have a number of diverse experiences throughout the week, which I hope they enjoy and get something out of. One of the highlights of the week will be on Thursday where 150 students will fill the Nudgee Pool in the effort to break the Australian Outdoor aerobics record for number of people doing it at once.
In our extra-curricular activities, we had many boys participating across Theatresports, Chess, Rugby and Basketball throughout the term. I would like to congratulate all of these boys for getting involved in Nudgee life.
It was with great pleasure that McKenna House acknowledged the students in the House who have improved their grades between Term 4, 2020 and Term 2 2021. Several students were already acknowledged in this category through being awarded the Principal Award on College Assembly. The McKenna academic improvement award acknowledges McKenna students who may not have been awarded the Principal Award but still saw significant academic improvement. It should be a goal of all the students at Nudgee College to seek to improve each day along their journey.
Academic improvement award winners
Congratulations to the following students for demonstrating hard work and persistence:
Kai Combarngo, Hamish Mathewson, Ben Perrett, Jed Manson, Brandon Martinz, Thomas Venturin, Thomas Maxa, Cormac Foster, Dylan Lawrance, Morgan Chippendale, Caleb Reiher, Patrick Dallimore, Baxter Giorgas, Grady Wiskar, Logan May, Rex Quy-Verlander, Mitchell Doyle, Jacob Tucker, Sam Aggs, Cooper McKenzie, Troy Miller, Thomas Kearney, George Dennis, Alexander Peter, Lucas Ackland, Lucius Conroy, Cody Henaway & Toby Quy-Verlander.
Thank you for all of your ongoing support of McKenna House and Nudgee College. I wish everyone a very safe and happy school holiday period. I am very much looking forward to a busy but enjoyable Term 4.
Mr Paul Kehoe
McKenna House Dean
Murphy
Term 3 is always big, full of events, sport, and a general air of excitement. This year was no exception, particularly in a boarding context. With Rugby and Basketball on, boys were kept very busy throughout the term, with training most mornings and afternoons and games on weekends. Term 3 generally sees more boys stay in on weekends because of sport, which makes for a great atmosphere within the boarding house and results in stronger connections between the boys within Murphy. This was particularly evident this year and I commend the boys of Murphy for embracing this and making the most of all the rec trips that were on offer this term.
A number of great things happened in Murphy this term. A highlight was the Christmas in July formal dinner. In particular, the performance that some of our Murphy boys did as part of this, singing a rendition of Goondiwindi Pork. Although their harmonies were a little raw, the boys got into it and it was very entertaining.
Another highlight was Round 2 of the Bathersby Cup, which Murphy won! This was a great display of teamwork amongst boys of varying year levels as it required bigger boys to work with the smaller boys in order to complete the task successfully.
The Murphy Mini-Teams Competition continued this term, with lots of points up for grabs. Round 1 was a putt-putt competition where the boys ventured across the road to the local mini-golf course and put their short game to the test. Well done to the Maroon Eagles for winning this. Round 2 was more of an individual event with a Park Run being held during the lockdown period. Boys had the option of running 2.5km or 5km with every kilometre run worth 100 points. Well done to the boys in the Tigers for showing up to this and winning the event for their team. Round 3 was a basketball competition and again the Eagles came out on top. However, the biggest points this term were awarded to the boys who received gold, silver and bronze awards for their academic achievements in Semester 1. Well done to the boys in the Orange Tigers for dominating this and seeing their team climb to the top of the leader board. With one term left in the season, it is anyone’s trophy (and pizza party) to win. Can the Brown Moles take it out for a second year in a row, or will another team come out on top. All will be revealed in next Term’s newsletter.
As always, The Murphy REBEL award has been a prominent part of the Murphy culture this term with a boy each week being recognised for his service to Murphy and the wider boarding community. Well done to the following boys for being awarded this in Term 3:
Darcy Turner
Daniel O’Sullivan
Roman De Clara
Jack O’Brien
Harry Wright
Max Mason
Morgan Bourke
With the holidays drawing near, I wish all Murphy boys and their families a happy and safe holiday. I hope the boys enjoy some well-earned down time and that their families enjoy having them home for a period of time. A quick reminder that all boys must be back before 7:00pm on Monday the 4th of October and all boys must return with appropriate haircuts, in keeping with school policy.
Mr Alex O’Regan
Head of Murphy Boarding House
O'Brien
As we reach the end of another busy term, and one that many refer to as the “Premiership Quarter” it is so important that we take a chance to look back at what has been achieved by our wonderful boys in O’Brien.
This term was definitely not without its challenges; the 10-day lockdown in South East Queensland put pressure on many families, not to mention the boarding staff. For the 35 odd boys who remained in the boarding house over this time, I was blown away by the level of maturity and resilience they showed, especially during the 35 odd hour ‘hard lockdown’. Even the way the boys approached their online classes throughout the week blew staff away. It is occasions like this that actually help form new friendships and build a stronger community, and I think this was definitely the case for the boys in O’Brien.
As we all know, the constant uncertainty in which we are currently living and the threat of COVID restrictions makes the boarding journey for our youngest men even more difficult. “Sir what happens if? Will I get to go home? Can my parents visit?” Boarding at such a young age is hard enough, let alone when circumstances can change overnight and decisions are made that ultimately impact their ability to see family, friends, or even go home during the holiday period. I am so incredibly proud of the boys in O’Brien.
While many staff find Term 3 the most difficult, as a Head of House I really enjoy this time of the year, as so many of our boys are involved in the extracurricular programs, mainly basketball and rugby. I truly believe that playing a team sport is so vital to the development of our young men; it teaches them many life skills including teamwork, responsibility, resilience and hopefully the value of hard work. However, as we enter Term 4 and the extracurricular programs on offer are fewer, I think it is important that families have discussions with their sons as to what their involvement will be in the final 8 weeks of the school year. We always reiterate that ‘a busy boarder is a happy boarder’, as it keeps both their mind and bodies engaged and provides structured time out of the boarding house.
As always, our success as a boarding family rests upon the amazing leadership demonstrated by our outstanding senior staff and I would greatly like to thank Ms Tracey Hoffmann, Mr John Cross and Mr Declan Markey-Towler for all they have done this term. These amazing people provide me and the boys with so much support and I know it is their generosity, care and willingness to go ‘over and above’ that helps build out O’Brien culture.
I would like to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable holiday break, and look forward to seeing the boys return in October for the ‘run to the finish line’.
Mr Jeff Campbell
Head of O'Brien Boarding House
Riley
Another Term is over. The Term 3 newsletter always mentions the pace at which things happen and while repetitive it is still very true. Term 3 comes and goes in the blink of an eye. Just to keep the repetitive nature, we even experience another lockdown and online learning again. I am very proud of how our young men responded to the most recent lockdown, and thank the parents for your continued support during this unpredictable time. Even with a lockdown we still managed to play Chess, Basketball and Rugby this term (albeit, a shorter season), add to that Year 12 Kairos, Year 10 Immersion, the Year 11 Leadership process, Inter-House Debating, assignments and exams. The Riley boys continue to step up and show the true spirit of Riley and Nudgee College gentlemen.

House Life
Once again, COVID-19 decided to mess with our House social life. We couldn’t have our House function and Bake Days are on hold for a while (fingers crossed for one in Term 4) so we haven’t been as social – I know the boys have missed that aspect of school; as I am sure the parents have too.
Riley House went into this year’s Inter-house Debating competition ready to win back the title. Ready to take on this task were Oliver Bryans, Oscar Roati and Sejin Lee. All three young men were amazing and really displayed their debating style. Unfortunately, we went down in the semi-final to Shaw House. Restrictions meant that the boys could not have support in the room but some of the Riley boys made sure to be standing right outside the door to cheer on our team!
I am pleased to announce the Riley Prefects for 2021 are: Oliver Evangelista, Hugh Smith and Will Sutherland. Congratulations to Oliver Bryans for his position of College Prefect Arts. I am also privileged to announce that our College Captain for 2021 is Harry Roati. I wish all our leaders the very best for 2022.
Spiritual Life
While the Year 7 Retreat was cancelled due to COVID-19, our Year 11 men were able to attend their two-day Leadership Retreat this term. It was great to spend some time with the wonderful leaders for 2022. I am very excited to see what this cohort will do next year.
Our Year 12 men were finally able to participate in their Kairos retreat, albeit a reduced and local event. But something I know was an important event they hoped would go ahead after it’s postponement.
Co-Curricular Life
1st Rugby: Robert Toia
1st Basketball: Josh Clark (c), Harrison Vanderburg, Mladen Markovic and Joaquin Tulloch
1st Chess: Dominic Stein and Mitchell Dudurovic.
Term 4 will be over all too quickly for our Seniors but, for our continuing students, it offers a tremendous opportunity for the boys to refine their homework and study routines in preparation for a new year level in 2022. I encourage the boys to revisit their Start of Semester (SOS) goals and consider how successful they have been in working towards these.
Please plan haircuts before then, and check if those khaki shirts still fit. I hope the boys have a wonderful break and return energised and ready for Term 4.
Prayers and best wishes to you all.
Ms Lynsey Hale
Riley House Dean

2022 Ross House Prefects
This year we were in a very fortunate position to have a 14 strong field of Year 11 candidates nominate for a student leadership position for 2022. After a thorough process, I am pleased to announce that Ben Gunter (Ross 1), Luke O’Sullivan (Ross 7), Jack Hallett (Ross 6) and Alessio Bianchi (Ross 6) have been selected as College Prefects for 2022. I am very confident that with the support of a strong 2022 senior Ross cohort, the Prefects will lead the House with great energy and purpose.
New Term 4 Ross House Dean
Welcome to Mr Brendan McGuinness (Ross 2 Tutor) into the Ross House Dean role for Term 4 as I move into the Director of Pathways role (Acting). Brendan will do a fantastic job and I will work collaboratively with him to ensure the consistency of care for the students of Ross House.
As always, I want to thank the Tutors for their care and mentorship of the students in Ross House. I also want to thank parents for their ongoing support and please don’t hesitate to contact me, Brendan or your son’s Pastoral Care Tutor if you want to discuss your son’s progress at the College. We are looking forward to Term 4 and the celebration of the end of Year 12 for our Seniors. I wish everyone a safe and enjoyable September break.

During Term 3, we managed to refresh and reflect on two retreats: Year 12 Kairos and Year 11 Leadership Days. All Year 12s were thrilled that their Kairos experience was the one experience the school worked so hard to bring to fruition. Unfortunately, Year 7 Galilee Day had to be postponed but we are heading to Shorncliffe in Term 4.
As I write this newsletter, the Year 12 students are looking forward to their formal night this coming Sunday and I look forward to sharing that night with them. Year 10’s and I have just completed three amazing days as a part of their Immersion experience and Year 11 will be looking forward to their semi-formal in Term 4.
It gives me great pleasure to announce the Shaw House Prefects for 2022 - Hamish Garvey, Archie Wallis and Isaac Armstrong.
Congratulations to Desmond Cowley, Hodda Boarding House Prefect.
The quality of the young men who applied for Leadership 2022 was simply outstanding and I wish to acknowledge the truly awesome young men who will continue to lead in Faith and Courage: Oscar Ezzy, Cooper Groves, Thomas Grant, Griffin Schostakowski, Tom Dean, Oscar Keith and Toah Ustick. I take this opportunity to thank our current Prefects - Degen, Frank, Sam and Cameron- for their enthusiastic leadership this term and look forward to their final few weeks next term.
As a community we wish Ms Kathleen White, PC Tutor Shaw 6, a relaxing and safe Long Service leave for Terms 4 and 1; we look forward to welcoming Kath back in Term 2, 2022. On behalf of Mrs Shaw and the Shaw Tutors, we wish you all a wonderful break and look forward to Term 4.
In Faith and Courage.

Tierney
Term 3 has been action packed for the men of Tierney House. Here is a selection of highlights from the Term.
Inter-House Debating
A fine team of young men represented us in the Inter-House Debating competition that kicked off during the learning at home period of the COVID-19 lockdown. We were successful in our first debate but were knocked out in the Quarter Finals by eventual champions, Magee. Thanks and congratulations to Jameson Jameson, Andrew Tora, Thomas Connellan and Billy Connellan who all conducted themselves with distinction throughout the competition.
Tierney Cup
An initiative of our 2021 Prefects was to introduce something that could see PC groups compete in a range of activities across the term in pursuit of the Tierney Cup. Activities included “Free Throw Challenge”, “Continuous Handball”, “Tierney Whispers” and the “Impossible Spelling Bee”. In a very compact term, the boys embraced these events that will contribute points to other events held earlier in the year to crown our 2021 Tierney Cup Champions.
Year 11 Retreat
As part of the leadership process, the Year 11s were involved in a two day retreat that challenged the group to look at where they are and where they want to go as a cohort in 2022. The boys created an image at the end of the retreat and in their words...
The symbolism behind the tree is mainly about growing as a person during your journey at Nudgee College.
No tree grows the same, they branch off different ways - No one has the same journey
Trees are always growing - You will change throughout your journey
Roots are the foundation - Representing the work put in to influence your journey, what people don't see on the surface that only you know
Roots will search for water until the find it - Hard work will eventually be rewarded
We are very much looking forward to this group leading the House in 2022.
Kairos
Although not in the planned format or time, our Year 12s got to experience Kairos in Week 8. This is always a special time in the lives of our Seniors and their families and thanks must go to the Identity team for ensuring that this event went ahead.
House Mass
In Week 9 we joined Shaw House in celebrating Mass. Thanks to Fr John Gillen for leading us in Mass and to the boys for the manner in which they conducted themselves at this special occasion.
Year 10 Immersion
This week our Year 10s have been involved in their immersion program, based here at Nudgee College. A highlight of the week was the boys putting together a time capsule that saw the boys gather items that are symbolic to a Year 10 Nudgee College man in 2021 that will be buried and dug up in a few decades time.
2022 Leaders
Congratulations to Tom Connellan, Tom Shaw and Johnson Meraveka who will lead the house as Prefects in 2022. It was also pleasing to see three more boys gain leadership positions - Andrew Tora (College Vice Captain), Darcy Turner (College Vice Captain) and Tom Sands (Arts Prefect). All young men embraced the process and will prove to be outstanding role models for the College in the new year.
Thanks to the Tierney PC Tutors, Prefects and Big Brothers for their dedication, daily presence and pastoral support of our boys.
I look forward to welcoming the boys back in Term 4, particularly our Year 12s who will be engaged in final exams in the lead into Valedictory.
