Year 8 student Rohen Ferreira has had one of his artworks selected as Highly Commended in the Year 7 to 8 category of the Independent Education Union of Australia, Queensland and Northern Territory Branch Awards for Excellence in Art Design.

As a result, Rohen and his family have been invited to an exhibition and presentation evening, where his artwork will be on display.

After receiving encouragement from his Art teacher, Rohen entered the competition a few months ago, and found out about his success via a letter.

“When I read the letter, I was a bit confused as I had forgotten what it was all about,” he said. “But after re-reading it I remembered and got really excited!”

In line with the competition theme, ‘in the garden’, Rohen submitted a lino paint press of his mother working in her herb garden, which he named ‘Mum’.

“My inspiration for the piece was a photo my dad took of mum one summer afternoon – she looked really happy,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to representing Nudgee College at the exhibition and seeing the other entries.”
