After deciding on a whim to enter this year’s Literary Competition, run by the Independent Education Union’s Queensland and Northern Territory Branch, the English Teachers Association of Queensland, and James Cook University, Year 11 student Matt Holmes was one of only four submissions to be selected as Highly Commended in the Year 11 and 12 non-fiction prose category.
The creativity of competition entrants was certainly not restricted, with students given the ability to write about anything they wished within their selected category.
Titled ‘Vigilantes Ad Mortem’, Matt’s entry explored end of life themes in contemporary and classic art films.
In its 57th year, the Literary Competition is the longest continuing writing competition for students in Queensland.
Head of English Mrs Monica See said Matt’s commendation is a wonderful achievement, in what is a prestigious and highly competitive state-wide competition.
