Deputy Principal: Mr David Johnston

B Ed, M Ed (Learning Management), Grad Cert Religious Education

Mr David Johnston finished his tertiary studies in 1992 and began his teaching career in Canberra at St Peter’s Catholic College (now MacKillop Catholic College). His roles there included Head of Sport and Acting Head of Department, HPE.

After teaching in England for a year, Mr Johnston moved to Rockhampton and worked at the Rockhampton Grammar School for five years initially as an Assistant Head of Boarding House and Head of HPE and was then appointed the Director of Sport. During his time in Rockhampton he completed his Masters in Education specialising in Learning Management.

He then moved to Brisbane and worked for the Queensland Studies Authority for three years. He was the Standards and Assessment Officer for Health, Physical Education and Agricultural Science and during his time was promoted to the position of a Principal Assessment Officer, before moving to Redeemer Lutheran College in the south of Brisbane, where he spent five years as the Dean of Learning and Teaching. Prior to his appointment as the Deputy Principal, Mr Johnston held the position of Dean of Learning and Teaching at Nudgee College.

As an educator, David is committed to providing the students of Nudgee College with a balanced and holistic education that ensures each boy achieves his full potential and sets him on a path to reaching his full potential academically, socially and spiritually. David enjoys distance running, is married and has one son.

 

Dean of Identity: Ms Erin Wedge

B Teach (ACU), B Ed (ACU), Masters of RE (Boston College), Masters of Arts (Biblical Studies) (Newcastle University), Grad Dip Arts (Theology) (Sydney College of Divinity), Masters in Educational Leadership

Ms Erin Wedge holds the position of Dean of Identity at Nudgee College. Erin completed her secondary studies at St Rita’s College and her teaching degrees from the Australian Catholic University. She is currently studying her Masters in Educational Leadership.  Erin began her career as a primary school teacher and has taught in a number of Catholic schools in south-east Queensland.

Erin spent 18 months living and studying in Boston at Boston College and Harvard College (Divinity School) where she studied theology, religious education and curriculum. During her time at Boston, Erin worked with the Campus Ministry Team and volunteered with the Jesuit Volunteers to give assistance to those poorest in Boston with literacy skills.

Erin has worked in a variety of areas throughout Brisbane. She held the position of Head of RE at Nudgee College in 2001 and 2002. She was also foundation Assistant Principal of Religious Education at St Augustine’s College, Springfield, and for six years worked as an Education Officer for Religious Education for the Archdiocese of Brisbane where she had the opportunity to work with schools across the Archdiocese on developing rich Religious Education and faith formation programs. More recently Erin worked for the Archdiocese of Brisbane’s Faith and Life Vicariate as a Senior Education Consultant writing curriculum for Year 11 and 12 students, and faith formation programs for adults and teenagers. She returned to Nudgee College in July 2011 as Director of Religious Education.  Erin has been keynote speaker and presenter at a number of religious education conferences and has worked as a private consultant in religious education and retreat facilitation.

Erin’s passions are in the areas of theology and scripture and she is excited to be working with the students and staff to deepen their knowledge and answer the call of Edmund.

Erin is married to Michael, who is a lecturer in Religious Education at the Australian Catholic University, and is a mother to Ella and twins Hannah and Samuel.

 

Dean of Students: Mr Peter Todd

Dip Teaching (English, Legal Studies) (QUT), B Ed (QUT), Masters of Educational Leadership (ACU)

Mr Peter Todd completed his secondary schooling at Marist College Ashgrove, where he was a boarder from Innisfail in Far North Queensland. He attended the Queensland University of Technology to complete a Diploma of Teaching and a Bachelor of Education, after which he took up a post at St Augustine’s College in Cairns working in the boarding school and as a teacher of English, Religion, History and Legal Studies.

He commenced working at Nudgee College in 1995 as an English and Religious Education teacher, before taking on the Head of Year 8 role in 1999. During his time at Nudgee College Peter has also been in the roles of Director of Activities, Director of Years 5 to 9 students, Director of Middle School Students (Years 7 to 9), and Director of Students (Years 7 to 12). He was appointed to the role of Dean of Students this year.

Peter has always approached life at Nudgee College holistically, attending various camps and retreats, coaching Cricket, Rugby and Debating teams, and managing the Track and Field Team. He is focused on developing the students to become Nudgee College graduates, good men who are Signum Fidei - a Sign of Faith to all.

 

Dean of Learning and Teaching: Mr Andrew Newcombe

B Ed, M Ed (Leadership and Organisational Management)

Mr Andrew Newcombe holds the position of Dean of Learning and Teaching.  He finished his tertiary study at Queensland University of Technology in 1993 after graduating from Ipswich Grammar School in 1989.  Andrew commenced his teaching career at St. Peter’s Catholic College (now Mary MacKillop College) in Canberra.

He has also worked at Emerald SHS, The Rockhampton Grammar School, West Moreton Anglican College, Westbourne Grammar School, and spent some time in London.  Before accepting the role at Nudgee College, Andrew spent 13 years working as a Head of Department: Mathematics, and has spent time working in boarding at The Rockhampton Grammar School.

Andrew has a keen interest in curriculum development and passion for educating students with an aim to creating deep thinkers.  He is committed to preparing students to become lifelong learners who are able to be contributing members within an increasingly dynamic society.

Andrew’s other interests include Australian Rules Football, Rugby, Cricket, and Tennis.  He is married to wife Jane and has two boys, Caleb and Jonas.

 

Dean of Operations: Ms Naomi Penrose

B Econ (Acc), B Law

Naomi Penrose joined the College Leadership team in 2017 as Dean of Operations. She has over 10 years of experience in global business advisory firms, bearing responsibility for daily operations across all functional areas. In addition to this, she is a Chartered Accountant, having graduated with a Bachelor of Economics (Accounting) and Bachelor of Law from University of Sydney. Prior to joining the College, she has worked in senior positions at Roofmasters, Explosive Protective Equipment, Ernst & Young, and London Underground. 

 

Dean of Boarding: Mr Christian Oneto

B App Sci (Ed)

Mr Christian Oneto has been appointed to the new position of Dean of Boarding at St Joseph's Nudgee College. This position will see Christian join the College Leadership Team as a renewed focus on developing the boarding experience at Nudgee College. Christian has worked at the College for the past eight years in a variety of roles in both the day school and boarding. He defines himself as a teacher first, believing the importance of academic enrichment is the primary focus of a boys education.

Christian’s immediate past role as Rowing Director at Nudgee College was marked with a number of great achievements, including the dramatic growth in the number of boys rowing, successfully winning the overall GPS championship and Open 1st VIII premiership five times in the past six years. Yet he would define his greatest success as leading the creation of the positive and passionate environment within the rowing community.

Christian grew up in Brisbane with a close connection to rural Australia where he would often visit his uncles on properties in South Western Queensland. This experience taught him the value of hard work and discipline but also instilled a love of country life. Christian has also taught overseas providing him a great breadth of experience but also an opportunity to teach a diverse curriculum and student body.

Christian will look to building upon the wonderful boarding life at Nudgee College by focusing on academic support, establishing good routines and continuing to foster a positive boarding community. Nudgee College Boarding prides itself on developing individual experiences for each boy to ensure they are maximising their time at Nudgee College, and more importantly their potential.

Christian is joined on campus by his wife Kym and three children, John (9), Sophie (7) and Chelsea (4).
