Steven Cook Award
This award for Year 9 students is named after an Old Boy who graduated with the class of 1990. Steven Cook was College Captain that year and excelled all-round whilst attending the College, winning the W. Carlton-Smith Award for Leadership, Character and Sport.
After graduating from Nudgee College, Steven studied medicine at the University of Queensland and followed this with RAAF Officer Training at Point Cook, Melbourne. In 2000 he served in the United Nations Peace Enforcing Mission in East Timor, providing emergency assistance to the East Timorese people.
His role in evacuating casualties of the Bali Bombing earned Steven the Conspicuous Service Cross. Duties then took him to the Middle East in 2003, where he participated in aero-medical evacuations of injured coalition soldiers.
With these facts in mind, recipients of this award are boys who display the following qualities:
- Compassion – A consideration of all others, particularly those who are suffering or are less fortunate
- Integrity – Students who act with honesty and respect and display strength of character
- Commitment – Dedicated and determined effort in all aspects of College life
Members of the Year 9 teaching staff have the opportunity to nominate worthy students, with five boys awarded certificates each term.
