Current Nudgee College students and an Old Boy performed as the opening act for Grammy Award winners Wolfmother at the Ekka on Saturday after winning the Triple M Show Starter competition.

Winning the Show Starter competition is the latest in a run of success for the band which consists of Year 12 students Joe Fleming (lead guitar), Guy Stacey (vocals and rhythm guitar) and Liam Roberts (bass) and Old Boy Will Mogg (drums - NC 2006-10). Fellow 2010 Old Boy Tim Lollback, the band's original singer and rhythm guitarist, has taken a break overseas in 2011 and Guy has stepped in so the band can keep performing.

Additional recent successes have seen the band awarded the Best All-Round Performance at the 2011 South Bank Institute of Technology Rockschool Challenge, receive a high commendation for their song "Demons only Dance at Night" at the 2011 Queensland Music Awards and place second in the 2011 Ambiwerra Battle of the Bands competition.

Calais was formed in early 2010 primarily to enter Brisbane's Rockschool Challenge band competition, which they won. In a relatively short time they have written several songs that showcase not only their precocious talent as song writers but also their skill as musicians.

The band is an emerging rock band delivering music with creative melodies, driving rhythms and emotive lyrics influenced by the Kings of Leon, U2, Muse and Led Zeppelin. They are hoping to be selected to play at the 2012 Big Day Out on the Gold Coast but need the support of the wider Nudgee College community in order to achieve their goal.

“Calais is currently charting at six in a national competition called My School Act,” said Joe’s father Patrick.

“Each band in the competition is linked to the school they attend, so the boys are flying the Nudgee College flag with pride! To stay in the running for a chance at a recording contract the boys need as many votes as possible.

“To help the boys out, parents, teachers and fellow students can register as a fan at http://www.myschoolact.com/registerFan and then click on *'Vote and add to my favourites*' on the Calais page and leave a comment if they wish. Alternately, people can text 'Calais' to 1994 4144,” he said.
