Before graduating, six St Joseph’s Nudgee College Year 12 students rode from Brisbane to the Gold Coast to help raise funds for charity.

Adrian van Balen Pena, Ben McLoughlin, Chris Tippelt, Max Ulvr-Green, Stefan Lawn, and Tristan Pagliano participated in the ride which began at South Brisbane and finished at Southport. Mitch Smith was also due to ride but didn’t due to illness.

“The ride was 100km and we completed it in 3 hours, 2 minutes and 15 seconds,” said Chris.

The course saw the boys ride along the South East Busway to Eight Mile Plains and then through Eagleby, Logan, Beenleigh, Coomera and Helensvale to the Gold Coast with a finish at Southport.

In addition to Bicycle Queensland’s aim of increasing the awareness of cycling the event also raised funds for health related charity/research organisations for which cycling forms part of the solution to their challenge. The beneficiaries for 2010 were the Heart Foundation and Diabetes Australia – Queensland with $5,000 raised for the two charities.

“We are a group of mates who met through school, most of whom already cycled on a regular basis,” said Chris.

“A few of us had done this event in previous years, so we thought why not get a group of Seniors together and do the ride as a Nudgee College team. We got everyone together, did a bit of training, a bit of fundraising and then did the event.”

Nudgee College contributed to the cost of the team’s uniforms while Vapiano, an Italian Restaurant at Surfers Paradise, paid for the riding shorts.
