Pioneering students create history at Nudgee
February 15, 2008
When school resumed on January 30, a pioneering group of students began the next step in their educational journey and, at the same time, created history by becoming the very first Year 5, 6 and 7 students at St Joseph's Nudgee College.

"There has been a great demand by parents over recent years to introduce these year levels which has led to classes for 2008 being full across the three year levels," Principal Mr Daryl Hanly said.
"Day one of the new school year went off amazingly well," Mr Hanly said.
"There was a special assembly, the new students were inducted into their House groups and the Year 5 - 7 students had morning tea with their big brothers from Year 12.
"It was a wonderful way to start what will be a wonderful year at Nudgee. The commencement of Years 5, 6 and 7 is very historic for Nudgee... From 2008, we will be a Year 5 to 12 College.
"Not since Nudgee's very first student, Michael McKennariey commenced in 1891, has there been such a significant change in the structure of the College."
Nudgee will continue to offer boarding from Year 6 to 12 but the younger boys will now be able to attend the College as students instead of having to catch a bus to St Patrick's College at Shorncliffe every day.
"Obviously, this is a huge advantage for both parents and students as the boys really feel as though they are part of the College by living and attending classes on the same premises," Mr Hanly said.
Offering this new, extended depth of education at Nudgee has also created strong interest for places in future years.
"We plan to increase our intake in 2009 to 50 boys in each year level, in response to the demand we have received," Mr Hanly said.
"In the future enrolments will be capped for Years 5 to 7 at 100 students per year level."
