Preparations are well and truly underway for next year's middle schooling initiative at St Joseph's Nudgee College, which means middle school students can receive both boarding and tuition at the College from next year.

Nudgee is always a hive of activity, but with buildings being refurbished, additional curriculum being written and new staff being interviewed to accommodate younger students, this term it's even busier than usual.

"We're now taking enrolments for middle school boys for 2009," Nudgee Principal Mr Daryl Hanly said.

There are two residences for the middle school boys, each accommodating no more than 70 boarders. Boys in Years 6-10 are housed in the same residence to reflect a family structure. Two other residences cater for the specific needs of Years 11 and 12 students.

"Our senior residential staff are teachers, providing an important link back to the day school," Mr Hanly said.

"The senior boarding staff who live on campus with their own families bring a wealth of experience to their roles. Boarders, in turn, benefit from a family environment," he said.

"As a Catholic College, attention is directed to boys' spiritual growth, and social and leadership skills are developed formally through the pastoral care system."

Nudgee offers 38 university pathway subjects plus certificate and school-based apprenticeships and traineeships.

Academic excellence is formally awarded and a traditional academic education is offered along with enrichment for gifted and talented students.

Hands-on experience working a vineyard, cattle yard or commercial kitchen is offered and subjects such as Marine Studies and Australian Environmental Studies are appreciated by many seeking work in those industries.
