When the 2010 St Joseph’s Nudgee College Year 12 students officially depart at the end of this week they will leave behind a permanent reminder of their Senior year.

For their Senior project the Year 12 students planted 28 Tuckeroo (Cupaniopsis Anarcardioides) trees on the College Flats.

“We wanted to do something that would leave a permanent and lasting legacy,” said College Vice Captain Jay Adkins.

College Captain Declan Jones and Vice Captains Jay, Allister Harrison, Morgan Holmes and Sean Minehan led the project that involved approximately 30 fellow Seniors digging the holes and planting the trees. Their cause was not helped by Mother Nature with constant rainfall adding to the boy’s workload.

“After we’d dug the holes the rain filled them up so we had to bucket the water out a couple of times. We were a bit worried the plants wouldn’t make it as we had to wait so long before planting them but they were fine,” said Jay.

In addition to their desire to leave a permanent legacy of their time at the College, the Captain’s thought the planting of trees for their Senior project was “symbolic”.

“Planting a seed, or a small tree, and in time having it grow was symbolic of our time at the College. We’ve grown just as the trees will,” said Jay.

“They might only be four years old now but the Tuckeroo is a good, hardy shade tree and it is something we can come back and show our own kids in 20 or 30 years and say ‘we planted those’.

“I would like to thank Property and Services for lending us the equipment, Logan River Tree Farm for the trees and all the boys who helped.”
