Grand Final beckons
October 11, 2011
A team of St Joseph’s Nudgee College students is hoping for a big turnout when they compete in the Grand Final of the Schools Theatre Sports Competition on Sunday.
Year 12 students Reilly McHugh, Casey Raymond, Ollie Mengel, Harry Morrison, and Djuma Dawes make up the team who have already booked a place in Nudgee College history.
“As far as I am aware, this is the first Nudgee College team to make it to the Grand Final. It is a fantastic achievement and the boys are to be congratulated,” said Head of Drama Ms Alison Crilly.
The Schools Theatre Sports Competition is an annual event run by the Sit Down Comedy Club. Participating schools compete in heats with winning teams progressing through to the quarter, semi and, ultimately, the grand final.
Theatre Sports is a combination of theatre and drama that is created on stage with the imagination of the performers and input from the audience.
Each team consists of a group of performers who play a series of games based on improvisation. The teams compete in 1, 2, 3 and 4 minute categories with various games per category that the team must be familiar with. Depending on the order of play, the team picks which game they want to play and the MC and audience provide ideas and stimulus for the improvisation.
Teams are judged on entertainment value, their storyline and on the rules/techniques of the competition. The judges award a mark of 1-5, with 5 being the highest, for each area. The teams with the highest scores at the end of the performances progress further.
“These boys have trained really hard throughout the year and can be congratulated for their fine efforts. I wish them the best of luck on their journey to competing at the Grand Final and on the day,” said Ms Crilly.
The Grand Final will be held at the La Boite Theatre Kelvin Grove at 2pm on Sunday 16th October. Ticket cost $19.50 for adults and $14.50 for children and can be purchased directly from the La Boite website or by phoning 3007 8600.
