The St Joseph's Nudgee College 1st XV will play at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night when they play as a curtain raiser to the Reds v Bulls Super Rugby game.

After a successful trial against Gregory Terrace last weekend the Nudgee College 1st XV will be able to test its strength against Churchie and TSS during the GPS Festival of Rugby.

“The Festival involves Open teams 1st XV – 4th XV and underage teams A – Cs, with Under 13 and Under 14s at Churchie, Under 16 at Southport and Under 15 and Opens at Nudgee College,” said Director of Rugby Mr Anthony Connellan.

“The 1st XV Festival of Rugby will be held at Suncorp Stadium before the Reds v Bulls game on Saturday night.”

The round robin trial match is a lead up to the 2011 GPS Rugby season which commences on Saturday 7th May against Churchie at Nudgee College.

However, it won’t just be the players representing Nudgee College on the night. Old Boys Andrew Twist and Duncan Male have been working their way up the ranks as part of the Qld Rugby Referees Development Squad and will be on the sidelines as Assistant Referees.

All teams continued pre-season training during the recent school holidays when they attended the rugby camps. The 1st XV camp was held at Casuarina on the north coast of New South Wales in the last week of the holidays while the GPS All age camp was held at Nudgee College with approximately 300 students attending.

“The All age camp was open to all students with day one focused on core skills of ball handling, ball carry, tackle, and breakdown and day two on defensive structures and team patterns,” said Mr Connellan.

“Both camps culminated with trials against Gregory Terrace. The games were hard fought and we are very happy with the results and where we are at this time of the season,” he said.
