Nudgee Wins GPS Swimming Championship
March 9, 2009
St Joseph's Nudgee College won its 16th Swimming Championship on Friday night after, remarkably, scoring the same number of points that saw them finish second last year.
Nudgee College's GPS Swimming Coordinator, Mr Andrew McDonald, reports on the College’s newest championship:
March 6, 2009 saw the re-emergence of Nudgee College as the GPS Champion School for the first time since 2006. In a closely fought battle the incumbents, The Southport School, maintained the lead until event 36 of 42 where Nudgee College gained the lead and fought hard to maintain it until the last relay.
The final result was Nudgee College 290, TSS 280 and BGS 258. This year’s premiership winning score of under 300 was the first in memory and underlines the spread of results amongst more schools and the new threat of Brisbane Grammar.
Under 15 swimmer Zac Whenuaroa (left) had an exceptional night winning the 50m Freestyle, 50m Backstroke and 50m Butterfly in Nudgee College record times to be named Swimmer of the Meet. His times in the Backstroke and Butterfly also established new GPS Records.
Under 16 swimmer Buster Sykes competed in the Open Age group and won the Open 100m Breaststroke in an outstanding swim.
Many thanks go to Head Coach Mr Matt Brown and Age Group coaches Mr Gerard Alexander, Mr Jeff Campbell, Mr Darren Crilly, Mr Taylor Murtha, Mr Cameron Lofstedt and Mr Chris Eisentrager. Special thanks also to Mr Bruce Barlow for his work with the newsletter and transport.
The GPS Swimming team is grateful to the work of the Activities Office under the leadership of Mr Peter Todd and, in particular Mr Mark Ensor. Thank you also to Mr Daryl Hanly and Mr Graham Leddie for their ongoing support.
