Nudgee College Cricket cleared for take off
November 15, 2011
Although the GPS season doesn’t officially begin until 2012, the St Joseph’s Nudgee College Cricket program has launched their season with a Super 8’s tournament.
Head of Cricket Mr Sean Toovey reports on the season launch.
The Nudgee College Cricket season is officially underway and began with a bang recently when the inaugural NPL Super 8’s tournament was held. The Super 8’s was a follow up to the success of the 6’s tournament held in March 2009.
Interest was so high from the 2009 event, that we felt increasing the event to 8’s would increase player participation and prove to be an even bigger and better spectacle.
There were members of each team coming from Years 8-12. In this event each team was captained by a member of this year’s 1st XI, and included two boys from Years 8, 9 or 10 plus one boy from Years 11 and 12 to make up the eight members of each team.
This competition saw 90 players, throughout 20 games, battling for a spot in the final under lights on Wilkes Oval.
The round matches were a spectacle of their own with the boys donning their own unique colour, white balls flying, sixes smashed and brilliant catching and throwing demonstrated. Power hitting was the order of the day with Hayden Greig, Maclean Jones, Bill Pendlebury, Dylan Shooks and youngster Tom Wright dispatching balls to all corners.
After the round matches were complete we marched up to Wilkes Oval for a BBQ and to watch the Years 5-7 final. “The Doggies” and the “All-Stars” delivered a tremendous match and the talent displayed was a sign of things to come.
Playing in front of a crowd of a couple of hundred people was a buzz for all the boys. The “All-Stars” won the event with one ball to spare.
The crowd then settled down to watch the main event between the “Royal Blue” team led by Harvey Aspin and the “Red Team” led by Paddy James. In a close final Harvey’s men took out the title with four balls to spare.
The evening was a tremendous way to kick start the Nudgee College Cricket season and to say farewell to our Year 12 leaders. I have no doubt that this event will become a permanent fixture on the cricket calendar.
A big thank you to the Cricket Support Group for their continued support, vision and hard work; without this group events like this would not be possible.
