Nudgee Basketball wins Gold Medal
January 13, 2009
A team of St Joseph's Nudgee College basketball players won a gold medal in the Junior Division of the National Schools Basketball Tournament held in Newcastle recently.
Below is a report by Nudgee Basketball Coach Richard Stokes on the team's success.
"During December 2008, Nudgee College entered a team of young players in the Junior Division of the National Schools Basketball Tournament held in Newcastle. The team surprised all by winning every game they played during the week and then taking out the Gold Medal playoff against St Mary’s High School from Newcastle 61 - 46.
The outstanding results during the week were topped by a 109 to 41 win over Hunter Sports High School, with the closest result against All Saints College Maitland where Nudgee squeezed in a win 52 - 48.
Special congratulations to Nudgee College Player of the Tournament Patrick Moore, who averaged over 25 points a game, and to our star point guard Thomas Dunsmore who, at 14, played well above his age competing against the much older 16 year olds in the opposition teams.
Other outstanding play came from Dan Affleck and Mitchell Swepson who showed that great defense wins games, and tournaments."
