Cricketers Impress on Rep Duty
March 13, 2009
St Joseph's Nudgee College is fast developing a reputation as a strong cricket College with both current students and Old Boys making representative teams.
Year 11 students Josh McClelland and Mitch Swepson recently returned from Cobram/Barooga, on the Victorian-New South Wales border, where they both represented Queensland in the U15 team at the Secondary Boys Cricket Championships.
Josh, an opening bowler, and Mitch, a leg-spinner, both performed extremely well during the six-day Championships. Josh took wickets every day, including 4/31 against Victoria, while Mitch’s best was 3/23 against South Australia.
At the conclusion of the Championships Josh was named as the sole Queensland representative in the National U15 team and will travel to India on a 10 day tour in September.
"I was really excited to make the Australian team as there were a lot of really good players at the Championships," Josh said.
"I've never been to India so I am looking forward to going to places such as New Delhi and a couple of others. It will be exciting."
Josh and Mitch have both been members of the Nudgee College 1st XI for the past two years. The team is currently on top of the GPS ladder on 48 points, two points clear of their closest rivals Churchie, with two rounds remaining.
On an international level, Nudgee College cricket continues to provide first class players with Old Boys Brendan Nash and Nathan Hauritz currently playing test cricket overseas, albeit for different countries.
Several years ago Brendan (1995 Old Boy) moved over to the West Indies where his father was born and raised in an attempt to play Test cricket. He debuted for the West Indies in New Zealand last summer and earlier this week made his maiden Test Century for the West Indies against England in the Caribbean.
1998 Old Boy Nathan Hauritz is currently in South Africa with the Australian Squad.
