Cricketers claim title
July 6, 2011
Being the offseason and school holidays didn’t deter a team of Nudgee College cricketers who competed in, and won, the Queensland Cricket Indoor Secondary Schools title recently.
The team, which was made up of Year 10 student Lachie McRae, Year 11 students Paddy James, Dylan Shooks, Harvey Aspin, Ryan Dowse, and Ryan Kay and Year 12 students Sam Dennett, Brian Sanders and Kunaal Kumar, finished the tournament undefeated.
“Nudgee College entered after I was approached by a few of the students to see if the school could nominate,” said Director of Cricket Mr Sean Toovey.
“Quite a few of the boys play socially together in the offseason to stay sharp,” he said.
The team was coached by Nudgee College Old Boy Matt Lynn (NC 2005-09) and played matches against Narangba Valley SHS, St Columban's, Villanova College, Tullawong SHS, Iona College, and Ryan Catholic College during the three day tournament. They were also due to play Kilcoy but they forfeited.
The final was played against Townsville-based Ryan Catholic College with Nudgee College coming out 103-61 victors.
Watching the final and later presenting trophies were Queensland Bulls players and Nudgee College Old Boys Chris Lynn (NC 2003-07) and Joe Burns (NC 2002-06).
An All-star team was selected at the end of the tournament with Nudgee College students Kunaal Kumar and Ryan Dowse making the team.
