College wins National Knockouts
December 10, 2010
The St Joseph’s Nudgee College Senior Track and Field team competed at the National Schools Knockout Competition in Melbourne recently and came back victorious.
Director of Track and Field Mr Peter Kropp reports on the team’s success.
The Nudgee College Senior Track and Field team were victorious on Monday December 6th at the National Schools Knockout Competition held in Melbourne.
Sixteen teams from throughout Australia competed in a very high standard event with some outstanding results. It was probably the biggest and strongest field ever assembled at a National Knockouts Final.
The team event ranks the competitors, and scores of 32 points down to 1 are allocated. Team Captain Yarnell Fischer was the fastest in the 100m, and 5th in the 400m, whilst Anthony Collins was ranked 2nd in both the 100m and 110m Hurdles.
Fraser Thompson was placed 3rd in the High Jump with a 1.95m leap, and 4th in the Long Jump with a PB 6.39m. Fraser also filled in the Shot Put role creditably, as did Henry Fitzgerald in the Javelin.
Jonathan Burgess and Kieran Storch (PB 4:15) ranked in the top 10 (of 32 competitors) in 1500m against a number of National Schoolboy Champions, and Stefan Lawn ran a beaut 400m to be placed 4th overall.
The day was wrapped up with a 3nd placing in the Relay. When the final scores were announced Nudgee College was named the winners on 331 points, over two Victorian athletic powerhouses, Haileybury College (2nd on 314) and Melbourne Grammar (3rd on 309).
The Intermediate team had an up and down day, with 10th being their final placing. This age group includes athletes up to 16 years, and our team had a 13, two 14 and two 15 year olds giving away years of maturity and experience!
The competition was again a very high standard, and special mention must go to Caleb Timu (2nd in the Shot Put) and Garrick Harding-Smith (3rd in the Javelin).
Shemaiah James was outstanding in extending his 13 years School Record leap of 6.20m for a 4th in the Long Jump, and an equal state record leap of 1.85 for 3rd in the High Jump.
Sprinters Will Shipperley, Joshua Lowndes (PB 200m) and Riley Brennan ran solidly in their events, whilst James Lingard and Soren Kingsbury battled the Melbourne heat in their 800m.
Thanks to coaches Mr Paul Schaumberg, Mr Gary Taylor and Mr Nick Toohey for travelling to Melbourne, and to the Tour Coordinator Mrs Maureen Toohey for her exemplary work in organising the trip.
