St Joseph's Nudgee College won its 38th GPS Rugby premiership on Saturday after beating Brisbane State High School in a thrilling game.

The 29-22 victory over the previously undefeated BSHS 1st XV saw the GPS premiership shared between Nudgee College, BSHS and TSS with all teams losing only one match throughout the season.

"Winning a GPS premiership is a very special occasion for both the players involved and the school community," 1st XV coach Mr Anthony Connellan said.

"It was a fitting end to a fantastic season and well deserved as this group have worked very hard together as a team to achieve the results they have.

"To beat Brisbane State High School, a team unbeaten in almost three seasons, in the last round of the 2010 competition is very satisfying knowing the effort the players have put in. They are a brilliant group of young men who have been well led by Captain Phil Kite and team leaders Jay Adkins and Jake Milne.

"Highlights of the season have been great leadership, discipline and outstanding go forward up front through Phil Kite and Caleb Timu, support play from Tim Lollback and Kristian Satui, direct running by Hymel Hunt and attacking flair from Jake Milne and Stephen Hunt.

"This season was a team effort from a group who bonded very well and all played their own role to the best of their ability."

Director of Activities (Acting) Mr Mark Ensor described Saturday's results as "fantastic".

"2010 was a fantastic year for all Open rugby players and teams with the 2nd XV-7th XV undefeated and the 1st XV GPS Premiers," he said.

"Saturday's game was billed as the grand final and the whole College got behind the 1st XV team. Besides the fantastic result of winning the premiership the highlight was seeing a full grandstand cheering on the 1st XV.

"1st XV players and coaches, Mr Anthony Connellan and Mr David Miles, have done a remarkable job of winning the premiership in a year of change for the College's rugby program, with Mr Connellan only starting at Nudgee College in March, as Head of Rugby and 1st XV Co-Coach."
