St Joseph’s Nudgee College Year 8 student Shemiah James and Facilities Hire and Security Manager Erica Hamp have excelled at Championship events in Track and Field and Outrigger respectively.

Track and Field Coordinator Mr Peter Kropp reports on Shemiah’s success at the National Little Athletics Championships.

Recently, Nudgee College Year 8 athlete, Shemiah James competed at the National Little Athletics Championships at the University of Queensland in Brisbane.

Shemiah competed in the High, Long and Triple Jumps. He was successful in the High Jump winning with a leap of 1.74m, placed second in the Long Jump and broke the Championship record in the Triple Jump with a jump of 12.69m.

In March this year Shem also competed in the Australian Age Championships in Sydney where he had great success winning all three jumps.

Shemiah has a rich “blue and white” track and field pedigree with his older brothers having been very talented Nudgee College track and field athletes. Eldest brother David James (NC 1998-2000) was the captain of the “Big N” team in 2000.

Shem is eagerly awaiting the start of this year’s track and field season!

Proving you don’t need to be a student to excel in the sporting arena, staff member Ms Erica Hamp enjoyed great success while competing at the World Outrigger Sprint Championships in New Caledonia from 21 - 28 May.

In a very successful Championship, Ms Hamp won a Gold Medal in the Senior Master Women’s (SMW) 500m after coming fourth in the event twice in the past eight years. Ms Hamp also made the finals in the masters (4th) and open divisions (6th), won silver in V12 SMW and bronze in 1000m SMW V6.
