Celebrating sporting representatives and achievements
August 6, 2009
St Joseph's Nudgee College students and Old Boys have been doing themselves and the College proud recently across a range of sporting endeavours.
Heading the list of success is swimmer Brenton Rickard. The 2000 Old Boy was the toast of Australia last week after winning the 100m breaststroke at the World Championships in a new world record time of 58.58sec. Brenton is the first Australian male in 45 years to win an Olympic or world breaststroke title.
Director of Activities Mr Peter Todd said Brenton's achievements on the world stage are an example to everyone about what hard work and determination can achieve.
"When Brenton was in Year 8 and 9 he made the College GPS Swim team as a relay swimmer but not an individual one," Mr Todd said.
"In Year 10 he made the team as an individual swimmer and by Year 12 he was GPS Champion. He was also awarded an OP2 which is a great result."
Also representing their country are Year 12 students Tom Amies (Rowing), Cayden Matehaere (Rugby), Ted Postal (Rugby), Waita Setu (Rugby), Kimami Sitauti (Rugby), Curtis Skinner (Sailing), and Year 11 student Josh McClelland (Cricket).
Tom Amies is currently in France competing in the Junior World Championships as part of the Australian U19 Men's Rowing team. Tom is the first Nudgee College student to make the team while still at the College.
Kimami Sitauti, who was the leading try scorer at the recent National Carnival, and Waita Setu have been selected in the Australian School XV while Cayden Matehaere and Ted Postal, a College Vice Captain and the 1st XV Captain, have been selected in the Australian A Schools team.
All boys will play Tonga in September before teams are reselected for games against New Zealand schools. After the games against Tonga and NZ, 28 boys will be selected to tour the UK for four weeks in November and December.
Another College Vice Captain Curtis Skinner has just returned from Brazil where he represented Australia in the Youth World Sailing Championships and was ranked 23rd in the world.
Josh McClelland is the sole Queensland representative in the Australian U15 cricket team and will travel to India on a 10 day tour in September.
2007 Old Boy Chris Lynn is also making a name for himself in cricketing circles. Chris, who captained the Queensland U19 side at the National U19 Championships last year, has just signed a rookie contract with the Queensland Bulls.
Also offered a rookie contract recently was 2008 Old Boy Stefano Hunt. Stefano will join the Western Force next year in a move that will see him team with 2007 Old Boy James O’Connor. Both boys were part of the College’s 1st XV in 2007.
Completing the recent selections are Year 12 students Chris Karala and Eric Lede who have been selected in the GPS Football team to play in the annual AIC v GPS match on August 10. Fellow Year 12 student Jaydon Munn has been named as a shadow player.
Also in football, 2008 Old Boy Damon Jennings will soon head to Oakland City University Indiana on a football scholarship.
Nudgee College Principal Mr Daryl Hanly said he was delighted that both current students and Old Boys were being rewarded for their efforts.
"I am extremely pleased to see so many of our boys doing so well in their chosen sport," he said.
"The success of each of the students and Old Boys across so many different areas means the College’s aim of being able to create an environment where every person is respected and each student is encouraged to strive in the academic, spiritual, social, personal, cultural, and sporting aspects of life is being achieved.”
