From Ballymore to Suncorp Stadium
May 16, 2012
It’s been a busy two weeks for our St George Qld Reds and Nudgee College with high profile Reds flanker Beau Robinson sharing his life story with our boarders last Thursday evening whilst on Friday our 1st XV were invited to Ballymore for an opposed training session with the St George Reds to help prepare them for their encounter with the Chiefs and this Saturday our 1st XV line up for the Festival of Rugby at Suncorp Stadium as a curtain raiser to the Reds v Lions game.
At the invitation of Nudgee’s Head of Rugby – Anthony Connellan, the Qld Reds blonde headed flanker Beau Robinson captivated our 170 Hodda and Murphy residence boarders with his life story as part of the Boarder's Formation Program … ‘Dare to be Different’.
Looking for an opportunity up north, the all-or-nothing Sydney flanker shared the story of how he shoved everything he owned into his car, filled up and pointed it towards Brisbane. After initially pouring beers part-time to make ends meet Beau spoke to the students about the persistence, determination and self-belief which has seen him rise from the rugby scrapheap to a Super Rugby contract and ultimately Wallaby selection.
The very next day some of those students were to meet Beau Robinson again but this time face to face on the rugby field at the invitation of QLD Rugby in an opposed training session at Ballymore leading into their game with the Chiefs on Sunday. The Nudgee 1st XV squad were given homework to watch the Chiefs v Lions game and come up with the defence patterns.
The Nudgee players executed Chiefs plays and defensive structures against the Reds in both units and 15 on 15 situations. In what was an outstanding opportunity to learn and experience the skill, speed and intensity of Super Rugby the boys bought home many lessons for their own games.
“Our players have great aspirations to perform at the elite level and this experience has certainly fuelled their goals” said Mr Connellan.
As a prelude to the upcoming rugby season the Nudgee 1st XV will be at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night as the curtain raiser to the St George Qld Reds v Lions game. The 1st XV Festival of Rugby is a round robin trial match which includes games against Churchie at 5.35pm then The Southport School at 6.05pm
