St Joseph's Nudgee College’s Dean of Community and Mission Mr Chris Ryan says thank you to the College community for their support of the Philippines project.

Dear Members of the St Joseph’s Nudgee College community,

Thank you for your support of our fundraising activity during the recent rugby and football home game against Gregory Terrace. Over the two days of Friday and Saturday, we managed to raise $5,000 which was terrific.

The Philippines are now a part of the same Christian Brothers Province as us. This Province is called Oceania. The Brothers serve in 19 different ministries in the Philippines where they are in relationship with the poorest of the poor in this region.

Nudgee College has been involved in supporting this great work of the Brothers for the past three years. We have a twinning relationship with five educational communities on the Island of Negros in the Philippines. This year, we are taking 16 Year 10 students and four staff for a cultural and service leadership exchange for two weeks in August.

Our primary fundraising focus this year is in support of 'Anawim' (the dear little ones), which is an orphanage for deaf children. In the Philippines, these children are outcasts and do not receive adequate health care and education. The Christian Brothers are working to support these children.

In June, three Filipino women came to Brisbane to train with 'Hear and Say' to learn to care for these children. Nudgee College has made an ongoing financial commitment to sponsoring this important social justice work.

On October 16th, at the conclusion of our Year 5 to 9 Walk to the Philippines, the Nudgee College Community and Mission team are hosting the first ever Social Justice Luncheon in Ryan Hall in support of this project. I would dearly love to welcome a table/s from each College sport and activity to that function!

Another way the Nudgee College family can become involved in our Philippines project is through the promotion of literacy. The children in the schools of Negros love to read but can not access enough books. We are seeking the donation of fiction and non-fiction books for children from the age of 5-17. The Brothers have plenty of text books but are looking to expand their libraries in their schools.

We ask that families attending the rugby and football break ups this Friday bring a book/s for collection. Your generosity will be greatly appreciated and celebrated as a part of Nudgee College’s ongoing friendship with the people of the Philippines.

Many thanks,
Chris Ryan
