Rivalry put aside to help others
July 24, 2009
Students from St Joseph’s Nudgee College and St Joseph’s Gregory Terrace put their rivalry aside today to help raise funds for Nudgee College’s Philippines immersion.
In what has become an annual event, students from both Colleges wore their College colours in a free dress day before the Nudgee College v Terrace chess, rugby and football matches over the weekend. Students make contributions for being allowed to wear free dress with all money collected from both schools going towards the home game hosts overseas Christian Brother's project.
Both Nudgee College and Terrace have connections with Christian Brothers Schools in the Philippines and East Timor respectively. Year 10 students from both Colleges visit the respective regions as part of Immersion projects.
“This Saturday sees the coming together of two significant Edmund Rice communities”, said Nudgee College Principal Mr Daryl Hanly.
“We gather as brothers as symbolised through the fundraising activities of both Colleges in holding Blue and White Day and Red and Black Day, as well as the collections that will occur at the home game on Saturday.”
Dean of Community and Mission Mr Chris Ryan said the tradition that has developed with Blue and White Day and Red and Black Day is great for both Colleges.
“Each year we take turns to help each other. This year it is our turn to be helped by our brother school who will donate their money to our program.”
In 2008, the Nudgee College community helped raise $25,000 in support of the Christian Brothers’ Ministries in the Philippines. This primarily went towards helping develop Information Technology across five schools in their programs.
Mr Ryan said that one of the College’s primary goals this year is to support the training of health carers to educate deaf children.
“These carers are being sponsored by the Christian Brothers to train here in Brisbane with Hear and Say. Nudgee College has made an ongoing commitment to supporting this initiative.”
Preparations for this year's Nudgee College trip to the Philippines are well underway with sixteen Year 10 students and four staff leaving for the Philippines on August 13 as part of the College’s Immersion Week programs.
Years 5-9 students will do their bit to support those in the Philippines on October 16 when they walk from Shorncliffe to Nudgee College as part of the Walk to the Philippines event.
