The well known St Joseph’s Nudgee College Cattle Club and Rodeo Team officially began their 2011 commitments recently with a training weekend at Chudley Brahman Stud.

The main aim of the weekend was for the boys to select the beasts they will take on the 2011 show circuit. Sixteen beasts were selected and transported back to Nudgee College where they will be ‘fattened up’ and prepared for showing.

Chudley Brahman Stud, located just outside of Cooroy, was established in 1982 by Rob Walker, who set up the objective of producing red Brahman cattle concentrating on type and fleshing, with temperament being of paramount importance.

The weekend also offered the chance for the Nudgee College Rodeo Team to compete at the Gympie Rodeo. Six boys rode in the Junior Bull Ride section of the rodeo and were unlucky not to make time on some quality bulls.

John McNamee had more success in the Open Saddle Broncs competition and was the only rider to make time in his round, but was later eliminated.

The Years 5-7 Cattle Club has also begun for the year. There has been strong interest from the younger boys who will hopefully be the future backbone of the club.

The junior members will be teaming up with the older boys to learn about cattle and have started off with a short introduction to low stress stock handling. As the show season progresses the boys will start to travel to regional shows and represent Nudgee College in the Junior Sections of the competitions.

The first show of the season was at Bell last weekend where the Cattle Club was ready and raring to go and proudly represented their College.

Other shows and events the Cattle Club will be visiting during the year are:

 • Rockhampton - Inter College Challenge, St Brendan’s – March 4-6
 • Inglewood Show – March 11-13
 • Goondiwindi Show – April 29-30
