With the preciousness of the commodity of water on everyone's lips, an art competition and exhibition will be held on Saturday May 26. 'Aqua Vita' is the theme for the competition art, which will be judged by Senior Curatorial Advisor, Stephen Rainbird.

The show has a total prize pool of $3200, and purchase of these original artworks is available. Artists will explore the topic of our current water crisis, along with representation of images surrounding the Year of the Lifesaver. All styles and mediums are represented, with two-dimensional paintings and drawings attracting a $1500 prize, and the winner of three-dimensional ceramic and sculpture attracting $1000. An Encouragement Award of $500 will be presented, along with a $200 People's Choice Award.

The competition and exhibition is part of Allegria Arts Festival, held at Nudgee College on Sandgate Road. The annual event is a platform for the arts, and attracts exhibitors from all over Queensland. High quality pieces, often attracting several thousand dollars are shown.

Alongside Aqua Vita is the ArtShop, where exhibiting and non-exhibiting artists have the opportunity to sell less expensive items or reproductions of their work. It is an endeavour to assist local art workers and to provide easy access for the community to the arts. Small originals, cards, pottery and woodwork feature and are all priced below $50.

Opening at 11am and closing at 8pm, Allegria also plays host to a fashion parade showcasing Brisbane designers. Still focusing on the creative and visual arts, a feature of the fashion parade is Depazzi opal designs, the brainchild of Brisbanite Bruce Tully.

His exquisite jewellery designs focus on the beauty and uniqueness of Australia's own opal, mixed with crocodile skins, emu feathers, pearls and coral.

His jewellery has achieved acclaim in Europe, and has been lapped up by Gucci. Tully studied jewellery design in Florence and is setting out to do for opals what Palpaley has done for pearls.

Entries for Aqua Vita must be received by May 8, with forms available at allegria.nudgee.com.

The event is held at Nudgee College, 2199 Sandgate Road, Boondall.
