Nudgee's Head of Australian Environmental Studies and Clean Up Australia Day co-ordinator Brian O'Reilly said Nudgee as a Christian Brothers college is committed to the Earth Charter.

"Our students and families are reminded of our need  for stewardship, and the opportunity to celebrate and be part of the Clean Up Australia Day program is an important part of college life," he said.

Mr O'Reilly said he and a group of dedicated students and volunteers will clean up the surrounding waterways including the Nundah Creek and up towards the Boondall Wetlands.

Interested volunteers can meet the carpark outside the McKennariey Centre (near the running track) at 10am.

Clean Up Australia Day first started in 1989 when Australian builder and yachtsman Ian Kiernan organised a day to clean pollution from the Sydney Harbour.

The idea received an enormous public support with more than 40,000 Sydneysiders donating their time and energy to clean the harbour.

Since then, Australians have devoted more than eight million hours towards cleaning our the environment through Clean Up Australia Day and collected over 200,000 tonnes of rubbish.

The Clean Up Australia organisation also gained global support from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and launched Clean Up the World in 1993.
