Immersion Week planned for August
June 18, 2007
Nudgee Year 10 students can explore social justice concepts with Nudgee's Immersion Program this August.
Immersion co-ordinator Michelle Kinnane said the Immersion Program allowed students to experience first-hand many of the opportunities and learning experiences promoted in Edmund Rice's Charter.
"As a school in the Edmund Rice Tradition we have an obligation to ensure our students are given opportunities to experience first-hand teachings of Edmund Rice," she said.
"This program allows students to be given the opportunity to develop feelings of their own value and individuallity. It challenges students to leave their comfort zone and work with and in a community that they may not normally have contact with. This allows students to appreciate that everyone is different but equal, and that we can learn from each other."
Projects include:
- Byron Bay Environmental/Cultural Experience
- Carnarvon Gorge Camps
- "Stories From Behind the Wire" - cultural experience with asslym seekers
- Starlight Foundation
- Let's Talk - Indigenous immersion experience
- Disability Awareness
- Edmund Rice Camp
- Mungindi (Country) - Rural/farmland community immersion
Ms Kinnane said the program aims to equip students with:
- An awareness of others
- An outward focus
- A sense of solidarity
- Energy to get involved and promote social justice at Nudgee
- Social/leadership skills
- A sense of civic responsiblity
- Connections with Catholic spirituality and Edmund Rice
- A better understanding of their own values
Students can choose either Immersion or Community Assistance as part of Nudgee's "Service with Spirit" program.
