Drum Line opens competition

The popular St Joseph’s Nudgee College Drum Line made quite an impression when they participated in the official opening of the WorldSkills Australia National Competition in Brisbane recently.
The Nudgee College Drum Line, which consists of four bass drums, two quad toms, two snare and cymbals, commenced proceedings which were broadcast live to air on Foxtel and included speeches by Celebrity Chef David Pugh and The Hon Minister Geoff Wilson, Minister for Education and Training.
Nudgee College was asked to participate in the opening after a local resident heard the boys rehearsing and asked if the group could perform at the ceremony. The performance was the first outside of the school for the group.
“The NC Drum Line began life as a traditional percussion ensemble in 2007, where students performed on a variety of stationary percussion instruments,” music teacher Mr Adam Manning said.
“In 2009, the ensembles direction changed through the purchase of eight marching drums and cymbals enabling students to perform whilst marching. This purchase brought a new lease of life to the ensemble allowing students to march and perform simultaneously at various sporting and other cultural events at the College.
“The NC Drum Line is now a featured ensemble at home GPS rugby games and is loudly accepted and supported by the Nudgee College community,” he said.
WorldSkills Australia was established in 1981 and is a national, not-for-profit organisation that provides young Australians (aged 23 and under) with an opportunity to gain new skills, compete against their peers in their chosen trade and fast track their skills and career development.
The organisation challenges young Australians to strive for skills excellence and produces skill ambassadors that are held up as beacons to show the success that is possible via a trade or skill based career.
All Australian apprentices, trainees and Vocational Education and Training (VET) students have the opportunity to compete and, if eligible, medalists can compete on the International stage in the Skill Olympics.
