As a Catholic school in the Edmund Rice Tradition, St Joseph’s Nudgee College places a strong focus on being charitable and helping those who are less fortunate.

There are many programs and ways that members of the Nudgee College community do this and the work of each of the nine Pastoral Care Houses is no different.

Each house has a House Charity who they raise funds for throughout the year. These include:

  • Duggan – Alpha Residential Centre (House members collect toiletries in Term 4 which are given to residents of the Centre. The significant amount collected usually lasts residents about 4-6 months.)
  • Magee – Starlight Children’s Foundation (Fundraising via House Breakfasts, Easter raffles and pizza days. This year a group of 45 students and several staff also collected $4,191.20 in the CBD on Starlight Day.)
  • McKenna – Youngcare (Fundraising via the annual McKenna Trivia Night and will raise awareness for Youngcare at the last rugby and football home game against BSHS.)
  • Riley – Salvation Army’s Red Shield Appeal (see below)
  • Ross – Christian Brothers in East Africa (Fundraising via Game 1 State of Origin doubles. The house generally raises $1,000 for the Ruben Centre in Kenya which is a health and education centre for refugees in Nairobi, run by the Christian Brothers.)
  • Tierney – 2010 charity to be finalised but have previously assisted Guide Dogs Queensland

Riley House Dean Mr Aaron Knott reports on the recent work of Riley House in collecting funds for the Salvation Army’s Red Shield Appeal:

Thirty-nine members of the Riley House family joined with 14 volunteers from the Salvation Army on Sunday May 30 to collect for their annual Red Shield Appeal.

This is the 14th year that Riley has collected for the Red Shield Appeal. This year’s group included 32 boys from Years 6-12 along with seven parents who generously drove the boys to their collection areas.

The great work of the Salvation Army is especially important at this time and we are honoured to be involved in this small way. More than 80,000 new people contacted the ‘Salvos’ in the past year in search of assistance. It seems such a small sacrifice to give up only two hours when the money raised can go a long way to helping people in need.

Greeted by a beautiful autumn day, our group collected around $2,600 from the residents in the streets immediately adjacent to Nudgee College.

Many thanks to all of our volunteers and we look forward to next year with an open invitation for everyone to again be involved.
