During 26 March to 4 April 2008, John Cross (Head of O'Brien Boarding House) and I visited Papua New Guinea (PNG), spending time in Port Moresby, Madang, Lae and Mt Hagen.

During our 10 days in PNG we visited several current Nudgee families, enjoying fabulous PNG hospitality and also catching up with many Old Boys.

Having local contacts in PNG was of great benefit to the visit as it meant essential transport and communications were all taken care of in advance.

We visited several local PNG schools, which provided valuable insights into knowing where some of our Nudgee boys were previously educated.

We were even able to catch up with some teachers who taught Nudgee boys and we informed them of the progress their previous students were making in Brisbane.

The trip to PNG also enabled us to meet with prospective students and families to talk about the benefits of a Nudgee education. Sometimes this lead to enrolment interviews, saving families the time and expense of travelling to Brisbane.

One student we interviewed in Madang had a very special connection to Nudgee; his name was Edmund Rice Kaukia.

Both his parents had past connections to the Christian Brothers, which must have been significant as they named their first son after Edmund Rice, the founder of the Christian Brothers.

We are now planning a series of regional visits around Queensland, New South Wales and the Northern Territory.
