St Joseph’s Nudgee College Year 9 Business Studies students became entrepreneurs recently when they promoted and sold products and services to Year 5-7 students.

As part of their studies, Year 9 students worked in groups of 4-5 to design, create and sell a product or service to the College’s Year 5-7 students and produced a small business plan of their venture.

“The Year 9 Business Studies students have been learning about how to promote and sell products and services and what is involved in running a venture or business,” said Head of Business Operations Management Ms Bree O’Hara.

“Each group was given a starting amount of $20 for their venture. Some groups decided to sell food however, they had to survey the teachers and students in Years 5-7 as they have a healthy foods program,” she said.

Year 9A teacher Mr Terry Donaghue reports on the ventures in his class.

The Year 9A Business Studies class carried out their Enterprise Day recently with five different groups preparing different ‘products’ to sell to the Year 5-7 students.

These included a sausage sizzle, a handball competition with Freddo frogs in jelly cups as an aside, a Guess the Jelly Beans in the jar stall, hot tasty pizza slices, and a raffle with a very sweet set of prizes. Each team of boys decided on their groups venture and spent considerable time preparing for the day through class lessons and in their own time.

Success was not just making a profit, although that was achieved by all but one group. It was also about going through the processes of starting and running a small business venture. Each student had to submit a task report and an Excel budget sheet as their assessment as well as evaluating the team and individual performances through a self and peer appraisal.

One Year 7 teacher was heard to remark that this was a great initiative as it gave the ‘littlies’ some genuine interaction with the older boys. Well done to all three Year 9 Business Studies classes for a wonderful term activity.
