Students Interview State Member
February 27, 2009
State member for Nudgee and Minister for Emergency Services Neil Roberts visited Nudgee College today to be interviewed by a group of Year 11 students regarding graffiti in the community.
Mr Roberts spoke with students, Alex Holloway, Bren Moushall, Michael Potts and Jaiah Rains, who are currently working on a project that examines graffiti in the community as part of the Future Problems Solvers Program they began during their studies last year.
Along with a second group of students who looked at water and power saving, the boys wrote reports on their topics which were submitted to Program judges.
As a result of these reports, the graffiti group was invited to the National finals in Melbourne where they came third. They will now head to Michigan USA in May to participate in the International Conference.
The boys interviewed Mr Roberts after a request was made to his office.
"We wanted to speak with Mr Roberts to get some more ideas for our project," they said.
"We want to take our ideas out into the community so wanted to speak with the person who represents the community. We sent a letter to Mr Roberts and he came which is great."
The students each took turns asking Mr Roberts questions about his opinion of graffiti, the impact it has on the local community, policies that are in place to prevent it, what the government has done to clean up the electorate, the most effective ways for the boys to tackle the issue as a small group, and what his thoughts are regarding street art as a way of reducing graffiti. The boys will use the information provided to write a report which will form part of their submission for the International Conference.
Nudgee College Year 10 Personal Enrichment students compete in the Future Problems Solvers Program each year as part of their studies. The Future Problem Solvers Program challenges bright, motivated youngsters to use their imagination in applying learned information and advance thinking strategies.
