Students donate tables
November 19, 2010
St Joseph’s Nudgee College Year 12 Technology Studies students received a hands-on lesson in community service recently when they donated tables made in class to a local kindergarten.
The tables, a picnic set up with chairs and a play table, were made as part of the Community Project Unit and donated to Geebung Kindy.
Reflecting on service experiences students had to develop a design concept that solved a problem in their community. They were only allowed to use the tools and equipment in the school workshop and had a limited budget.
“The students did well with their limited budget,” said teacher Mr Mannie Navarro.
“The play table was constructed from one piece of ply and was then painted to keep the costs down.”
Seniors Chris Tippelt, Hylton Jones and Stefan Lawn worked on the play table while Ben Arnold and Will Griffin constructed the picnic table.
“An integral part of being a person is helping others. Through community service, we learn what it means to be a part of something bigger than ourselves,” Mr Navarro said.
Hylton accompanied Mr Navarro to Geebung Kindy recently to present them with the two tables. Staff Lorraine and Leah were very thankful for the donation and described the tables as “fantastic”.
“We just wanted to say a huge thanks for the fantastic picnic table and activity table that the boys made for our centre,” they said.
“The children have been thoroughly enjoying using them. The boys did a fantastic job and we really appreciate the time and effort they put into this project and your generosity in donating these to us.”
