2009 St Joseph’s Nudgee College Dux Sam Vollert continues to be rewarded academically, recently receiving a TJ Ryan Memorial Medal and Scholarship.
Sam was one of only fifteen high-achieving graduates from 2009 to be awarded the scholarship. Queensland Minister for Education and Training Geoff Wilson MP presented Sam with his award during a ceremony at Parliament House in Brisbane last week.
As a TJ Ryan Memorial Medallist, Sam will receive $2,000 in scholarship payments for each year he completes of a degree course to a maximum of five years.
Dean of Learning and Teaching (Acting) Mr Terry Donaghue attended the ceremony and congratulated Sam on his achievements.
"Sam is the first student from Nudgee College to receive the TJ Ryan Memorial Medal and we are very proud of him," Mr Donaghue said.
"This scholarship, when combined with Sam’s previously awarded University of Queensland Excellence scholarship, means he has set himself up for a wonderful start in his tertiary studies. Everyone at the College congratulates Sam on his achievements to date and wish him well with his future endeavours," he said.
A talented all-rounder who was able to find a balance between his studies and extra-curricular activities while at Nudgee College, Sam was awarded a total of nine Gold Academic Medals, one each semester throughout his time at the College.
In addition to his academic achievements, Sam was also a House Prefect and a member of the College's Open 1st XI, Senior A Debating, Cross Country and Track and Field teams.
The TJ Ryan Memorial Medal is named in honour of former Queensland Premier (1915-1919) Thomas Joseph Ryan. Mr Ryan was also a teacher and lawyer who died of pneumonia in 1921, aged 45. The awards recognise his dedication to public life.
