Medieval history came to life for St Joseph’s Nudgee College Year 8 students when they received a visit from performers of Living History Australia.

The interactive performance saw performers come out as characters from the medieval/middle ages era. Students were invited to ask questions of the performers related to the era but performers would not answer anything relating to modern items or events.

A total of six characters ‘visited’ the students during the performance including a knight, a lord, a pilgrim woman, a soldier and a religious Brother. Each performer was dressed in, or carried, replica clothing and weaponry consistent with their character and spoke to the students as if they were telling their ‘life story’.

At the end of the performance, students were able to try on and handle replica items from the medieval era including helmets, swords, shields, a longbow, and a chain mail armor suit.

“Year 8 students are studying Medieval History this term as part of their Social Science unit in Core,” said Head of Year 8 Core Ms Kelly Vowles.

“Later in the term students will give a 4-6 minute oral presentation based on one of three scenarios provided. They will dress in the role they are speaking and will be required to submit a bibliography and script,” she said.

All Year 8 students study Core as part of the curriculum. Subjects covered as part of the Core curriculum are Religious Education, English, Social Science and Literacy.

Although they cover different aspects, the theme of ‘rewind’ is constant throughout the Core subjects giving students a common element to their studies.
