St Joseph’s Nudgee College Year 11 Japanese students got a chance to practice their skills recently during a two day immersion with students from a visiting Japanese school.

The Nudgee College students spent two days with students from Kanan Boys High School in Kobe who were visiting the Nudgee International College. Day one had a Japanese theme that involved speaking Japanese for the day while day two was in English.

“The immersion experience allowed the Year 11s to meet with students on a one on one basis from our sister school,” said Head of Japanese Ms Rhonda Neill.

“It was a valuable experience for them to work with native speakers using Japanese for real purposes.”

Throughout the two days the students shared various elements of each countries culture including language, sport and food.

“On English day, the Nudgee College students worked with the Japanese students to cook a BBQ lunch. The boys were split into two groups with one group preparing and cooking pikelets while the other group cooked a traditional Aussie BBQ of sausages, steak and onions,” Ms Neill said.

The Japanese students also attended a College Assembly where Tomoki Ogura spoke to the school community about the students time in Australia and at Nudgee College.

“We have enjoyed our time here. Everyone is very friendly and we have enjoyed learning about Australia and playing football,” he said.

Ms Neill said the boys enjoyed themselves and described the immersion as a “success”.

“The boys had a great time and they all said it was a wonderful experience. The Year 11 boys even spoke Japanese on their own so from my point of view it was a success,” she said.
